Default another screen printing option - 08-22-2007, 06:41 AM

we've all seen the episode of rob and Corinne's version of home screen printing. just in case here is the link.

i've also found another but pretty similar way of creating a silk screen using pvc piping and gorilla glue/PVC glue/super glue. which is REALLLY cheap, inner-changeable and can be made in any shape or size needed.

all you need for the frame of the screen is four peices of PVC pipe (2 sets of 2.. e.g. 2 four inch pipe and 2 five inch pipe and so on), four 90 degree connector piping, and four semi-circle PVC casings (they SNAP snugly on to the PVC piping) that are slightly shorter than the four pieces of piping.

connect the four peices of piping into the four connector peices. and glue together. (the second picture is an example of the PVC casings that will be used later.)

then use the old curtain (or nylon -- your preference) and lay over the frame. the chosen fabric should be slightly larger than the frame.
using the semi-circle casings, clamp the fabric in place.
then by using the tips shown in the episode, apply your design to the nylon.

the next steps are also shown in the episode, but why not go all the way in the tutorial...

anchor the screen down so that it won't slide while painting. apply a somewhat generous amount of paint onto the screen. I like to do this above or below the image so that the image comes out clean and without smudges. with firm, long, smooth motions glide the paint across the screen using a squeegee or piece of cardboard.

since i don't know how to follow my own advice i had to do this a second time. i forgot to anchor the screen and i ended up with some blurs.
but either way.. here is the resulting product:

after i cleaned off the screen i like to either hang it or leave it on the screen. the mod podge does weaken a bit after wet and sometimes can stick to other things. keep this in mind during the clean up.

Let me know if you have any other questions. i know i'm not the best at describing...

also. if you don't have PVC, another GREAT alternative (which i HIGHLY recommend) is using and old, flat frame. if they're old enough, they'll have a routered edge on the back around the side of the frame if not, it's pretty easy todo yourself.
lay your screen over the back of the frame then secure the screen in place by using a piece of rope (the width of the routered edge and long enough to go all around). pull the screen taught at you press the rope into the routered edge.
if that doens't explain it very well, i can do another picture tutorial.

So clever! You can get piping from a local hardware store.

i have no idea, i haven't tried it. i would try it on a small piece of the fabric first. i don't see why it wouldn't though.
but if you're looking for an alternative to mod podge, white glue is practically the same thing.. i think.

either way, mod podge and white glue cost about the same.
