Lightbulb Homemade Beads! [tons of pics] - 07-19-2008, 10:04 PM

Since lindsclou asked, I have made a tutorial on how to make homemade beads!

You Will Need

2 Cups of Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
3/4 Cup Water
Medium Sized Bowl

Mix the flour and salt

Add water and stir until doughy

Knead the dough for a couple of minutes

Put in fridge for 15 minutes, or until cool

Take about this amount for medium sized beads

Roll dough into beads

Use a nail or something to poke a hole

It should look something like this from the top

Arrange on a pan (I recommend using parchment paper)

Bake in oven at 350º for 2 hours, or until they look like this

then you can paint! I used acrillic

This is my second final project!

This is cool!! Do they shrink at all? It doesn't look like they did. And also, how ,like moveable/shape-able is the dough before, and after? I'm sorry about all the questions, I just want to know, because I was planning on making some cupcake earrings.

cool! now I can make some of those giant bead necklaces you see around these days.

do you think these can be sanded to make them smoother?

The best thing is, if you are stranded with no food you could eat unpainted ones. *Laughs histerically* Cool!

Thanks CrazyLady! I used almost that exact recipe (the one I got online called for on the stove and cream of tartar) for the kids! However they never put in the instructions how to bake them! I will try your temp and time and make some beads if they will let me steal some! LOL!

And Victor I imagine they could be sanded to be made smoother. If regular sanding doesn't get you the results you want, try wet-sanding them.

they don't shrink, they just harden

the dough is really moldable before you put it in the oven
it's rock solid after words
so if you need to reshape them you might want to take them out early and try it then
I don't know how easy that will be though
