Arrow How To Make This Bow Tie Hat? - 01-25-2009, 01:37 AM

I even though I was watching the inaguration for Obama. I was amazed at Arethea Franklin's beuatiful bow tie hat which is shown in the pic below. My who adores Arethea and hats would love to have a hat just like it. So I would like to know if anyone can help me figure out how to make this hat? Please help because i have never made a hat before and really want to make a hat for mom!!!

She made a hat similar to Aretha's. Looks pretty good.

I want to find that book, dust if off, and read it again.
There was hope in the end.

It's just a basic cloche style hat (looks felted) with a gigantic bow on the front.
You can achieve the same look by making/thrifting a cloche and adding a ribbon. If you can't find ribbon wide enough, make one out of fabric.

You could probably make this by salvaging an old wool coat - make a basic hat shape a little oversized and then full it to your size (it'll also help hide the seams and you won't have to hem it.) Then take a few long strips and some fusable interfacing (so it holds its shape) and sculpt the bow. I think it's a pretty cool hat, but you have to have an Aretha kind of personality to pull it off.

Putting the "fun" in "dysfunctional" since 1988.
