Smile Reversible backpack / messenger bag - 10-11-2008, 12:09 AM

I'll love to see if you make something with this. And if you like, you can buy one for me at www.divymode.etsy.com

The Materials:
  • Fabrics in two different color/design (unless you want the same look for both sides)
  • Pellon (I think “Interlon” or other clothing reinforcer is also useful). (You may not use it if you chose a strong fabric)
  • 4 big buttons
  • Velcro
  • Bias tape
  • Thread
The Patterns:

The Measures:
(Sorry for the weird numbers in inches, but the original was made in centimeters)

Front 12.6” x 11” 32cm x 28cm
Back 15.7” x 12.6” 40cm x 32cm
Side 35” x 2.3” 89cm x 6cm
Backpack straps 26.3” x 3.9” 67cm x 10cm
Messenger bag strap 51.2” x 3.9” 130cm x 10cm
Little bag 7.8” x 7” 20cm x 18cm

The process:

1. Cut all pieces leaving some seam allowance.

2. From front, back and side patterns cut one piece of each fabric and two pieces of pellon. (The straps and the little bag don’t need any pellon.)
3. From backpack strap pattern cut two pieces.
4. Once you’ve cut them you must have these pieces:

5. Iron for pellon to join the corresponding pieces of fabric.

6. Make a hem around the edge of little bags.

7 Measure and mark where you want to place each little bag on the corresponding front piece.
8. Cut about 1” of velcro for each little bag.
9. Sew one face of a velcro strip to the upper part of little bags, and the other face to the marked front piece.
10. Sew each little bag to its front piece. (Be careful about matching between velcro faces for the little bag to close correctly.)

11. Fold the strap pieces right sides toghether. Sew them, and turn them over using a safety pin. Then iron them to center the hem.

12. BACKPACK ONLY: In the backpack back piece measure 5.1” from top to bottom; in the imaginary horizontal line of that measure center the straps separating them about 4.72”. Pin the upper part of the straps to the back piece of the backpack. The hem must be facing the back piece. Sew them with a zigzag stitch.

13. Sew the side piece to the front piece. (As the little bag is already sewn, be careful and don’t sew the side piece to front piece with the little bag in a wrong way.)

14. Sew the side piece to the back piece. BACKPACK ONLY:Use this same stitch for sewing backpack straps to the bottom of backpack separating them about 5.51”.

At this point you must have both sides of the bag almost finished.

15. Turn one of the bags inside out and stick it inside the other. Pin and sew the upper parts togheter with bias tape.

16. MESSENGER BAG ONLY: With the messenger bag facing out, sew strap with a zigzag stitch to the upper parts of side piece.

17. Measure where you want to place the buttons in the front piece and make matching buttonholes on the folding part of back piece.

18. Sew your buttons by hand (Be careful to sew them only in the front fabric. Don’t sew them to both fabrics.)

You’re done!!! Now you have a reversible backpack/messenger bag.

So it's a backpack in one direction, and a messenger bag in the other? How cool! I've got to make one of these for my laptop, and put in batting instead of interfacing. It's so cute!
