View Full Version : Nail Scissors: Better Than Seam Rippers.

Hi! I've been loving all the episodes of ThreadBanger! I noticed that you folks suggested a seam ripper to un-do the stitches on jeans for the jeans skirt tutorial.
My gramma used to use a curved nail scissors (aka cuticle scissors) to rip out seams. It's WAY easier, and I find you have a lot more control, and you don't poke holes in whatever garment you're working on.
Also, nail scissors are really nice for snipping loose threads and cutting thread on an angle (it's easier to thread a needle if the thread is a bit "pointy").
You don't need the expensive ones...just the cheapies from the drugstore will do.
Hope this helps! Keep up the awesome work! :)

They're alright.
But once you've got the right technique down, a stitch ripper will do everything that you need when it comes to ripping stitches.

I think both are pretty effective but I dont think the nail clippers would be as fun as sliding a seam ripper down some stiching and hearing it tear.

OK, see, because it's a pair of teeny little curved scissors (not nail clippers like for clipping fingernails), you can actually run one of the blades down stitching like you do with a seam ripper. :D It's so fun! I also like that if I get "stuck" when I'm tearing stitches apart like a seam ripper method, I can then snip them apart.
I know it's not for everyone, but I'm glad you like this method, xDirectorx!
This one definitely works for me, b/c I'm a total klutz and I poke holes in my clothing (and my fingers) with a seam-ripper. Hee!

oh my, i've never tried doing it with nail scissors...
anything that makes the process easier, i'm down for. there have been many times i've gotten stuck with the seam ripper and poked holes in my fabric....i'm all for the alternative. cannot wait to try it. though i do love when i get it just right and it rips 7 or more inches..the best (or one of) feeling in the world. i really like the sound to. :)

Another alternative to the seam ripper is the cuticle remover. They usually come with those manicure kits, they look like a tiny fork or a V, only with a curved blade in the middle. I use it sometimes, since I broke my last seam ripper. It is best for small seams, or any kind of small job.
