I have an old hoodie that's ripped from the bottom of the left sleeve until about halfway up the forearm, and I was wondering if anyone had any fantastic ideas about what to do with this hoodie. What I'd really, really like to do is to stop the sleeves at my elbow and hem it there, but I'm not so confident in my hemming. =/

Any suggestions?

Well you gotta start somewhere.I know I have a few shirts I messed up but with hemming you can't mess it up that much

If you don't plan on hemming you can stitch or safety pin the rip. Another idea is you can cut that whole sleeve off and stitch on another from a hoodie, sweater, or shirt.

You could pick out some coloured thread (maybe try thicker crafty stuff) and hand sew the rip, but make it intentionally messy, like chaos stiching. Alternatively if you have any interesting material or an old shirt with a design you like on it, you could cut it our and sew it over the rip, like a patch.

i agree about cutting to the elbow... just cut it then iron and fold over to make a hem then either sew form their or just leave it frayed... if you want to sew it i find it easy to staple the hem while sewing cuz i don't have the patience for pinning...hope that helps!

i dont know if your a chick but if you are; cut the bottom hem off. cut the shirt off about an inch below your breast. sew the bottom hem to the tpo and you have one of those new half tops.

hemming is pretty easy. but i know of people who have ripped clothes, nice clothes, and hated to throw them away. what they did was stitch it up with a contrasting color thread so that it stood out... just a regular cross stitch. it's looks cool and kind of dramatic

Hemming is easier than you'd think. The trick to making it not fray is to fold it up 2 X's. Fold it once, fold it over again, then stitch in place. You could use a straight stitch, or a whip stitch.

Another cute idea is to do the fold it up twice and stitch idea, but leave a bit of it un-sewn. Cut a piece of elastic to the right length to go around your arm, string the elastic thru. (Using a safety pin is a good idea). Then stitch the elastic together at the ends. Finally, stitch the folded-over part closed.

^^^ Basically what they call an "elastic casing" in sewing manuals. It's THAT EASY.
