I was messing around with a forage cap-like design (see american civil war soldiers' uniforms) using only parts of a pair of old pants, the body and top being from a leg, the bill from a pocket flap, and the band from the waist band.

It came out ok as a first hat attempt and working without a pattern, But I made several mistakes, such that it is a little tighter about my head than I would wish, and that the bill is at an odd angle thus necessitating the hat be worn at an odd angle as well.
I may or may not keep it, but my ten-year-old sister has already claimed it if I don't. I made a shoulder bag for her with the other leg of these pants that I will photograph when she gets back from her trip to the capitol for the 4th.
I recently introduced her threadbangers and she has since been bugging our mother to let her take apart all her old clothes :P
So far we've made her the bag, a T-shirt pillow from the tuts section, and a double-sided T-shirt vest from the old episode.
As far as my cargo pants endeavors go, I am halfway through making a shoulder bag from two pairs of cargo pants that will have eleven pockets in total.

looks nice, but I think the brim could have been a little bit longer, but other than that it looks really good

Actually Gregor it couldn't. I could only make it as long as the original pocket flap. In fact the acuteness of the brim was due to my efforts to keep it as long as possible.

i have an idea u could try to fix the angle of ur "bill" u could fold the bill up against the top part of the hat and iron it. it might help sit further up! either way i think u did a pretty awesome job :D

This turned out really well! Sorry it wound up too small for you. I make sizing mistakes a lot when I'm learning new projects, so it's not just you.
Welcome to ThreadBanger!

Thanks all for the compliments.
Cypriotchick:
if the front of my head was perfectly flat this would work perfectly, but as it is not, the bill has to make a curve to stick out properly, and my curve wasn't acute enough. Ironing won't do much to fix it.
Dreamerhill:
steal away!
I'm currently working on a second one that may have a better patter, but hopefully will still have he waistband.
Ladyjanewriter:
I'm not exactly new to threadbanger, but thanks for the re-welcome. :)
I had to ditch my old account for fear of world collision if you know what I mean.
More Cargo Pants re-creations to follow soon hopefully!

it did turn out great i love how you kept the belt loops on it just looks cooler that way and you can still put a belt around the top if you wanted to

actually glitter, I'm not sure that'd work.
I had to cut, then re-sew the loops to keep them in, so the space might not be wide enough for an actual belt.

Actually you can use the remaining fabric(if any) and make a skinny belt just to fit the smaller belt loops on your hat. Or use other scrap fabric to do so.
The hat is fantastic, btw. Now I know what I can do with my old pants. :)

To make the hat a little larger, put your knee in the hat at one side and both hands on the other, then pull, hard. Works better if the cloth is damp .... and you made sturdy seams to match the fabric.

well, the hat has been claimed by the little sister, so there isn't much point in re-sizing it. I've already started a second hat that is based on a souvenir hat i took apart, so it should be much more to the style and size of my liking.
it's on hold until my messenger bag is finished though.
