I'm reallly excited to see what you guys make, so don't let me down!! ; )
Short Challenge (due the 1st day of July by midnight NY time)
(I like the way ryanmoore put it>) Since "Art is a reflection of the time in which it is created." Create a(n) item(s) of clothing(s) that reflects our time period, using satire.
You have 15 dollars to work with. "make it work"
Long Challenge (due by the 14th of July ( midnight ny time))
You are to create a couture bathing suit. There is a Threadbanger episode that can possibly help you, so look back to about last summer's shows.
You have $20.
Have fun, I can't wait to see what you make!!

For the couture bathing suit challenge, I think it would be great to post what couture really is under the challenge. With crap-tastic brands like "juicy couture" running around and ruining peoples idea of what couture is and all.
From Wikipedia-
Haute couture French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking"refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted fashions. In modern France, haute couture is a "protected name" that can be used only by firms that meet certain well-defined standards. However, the term is also used loosely to describe all high-fashion custom-fitted clothing, whether it is produced in Paris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris) or in other fashion capitals such as Milan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan), London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London), Rome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York) and Tokyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo). Haute couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.
You can also learn more about couture at this site.

Satire=lit. term for sarcasm, there are 2 types of satire the "we're all friends and being sarcastic together, no harm done"; and the hurtful sarcasm, where you are meaning to degrade.
Using Sarcasm, create an item of clothing of today.
um, does that help???

one quick question, since the bathing suit is supposed to be couture im guessing it doesnt have to be functional as a swim suit? like it doesnt have to be water or beach friendly right?

Dang. How come you come up with one I want to do and have ideas for.. right as my future Sister in law's mom steals my machine? (she's making dresses for the bridesmaids and her's broke...lol)

I'm sorry, but why make a garment if it isn't functional? That's just a waste of good fabric.
Why couldn't it be couture and functional?

It can, but some couture pieces are just made for show, like for photo shoots and such.

basicall the whole ponit of couture ( in my understanding), is basically something you would NEVER wear in public, because its that outrageous, if you wore it out in public you would look like a lost runway model. If you want some advice/inspiration check out OutsaPop on here and on flickr. Just start with a base bathing suit and find a whole bunch of something. then figure out an awesome way to attach them all to the base.then photograph and send in your entry. try to pick things that you would NEVER put together, ex: swarovski and cockroaches. Okay maybe not that extreme, but you see my point.Perhaps a better word could be avant garde. Even if you don't like yourslef in a bathing suit, i bet you know someone who does, make it for them, but just tell them youll be taking pics of it. Okay so, since everyone is kinda lost i'm gonna give an example which means NO ONE can actually do this and send it in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
so i went back and reference the bikini episode and made a simple bikini out of two old blakc shirts.OKay so now i have a black base bathing suit ( tongue twister). so i set off to my local thrift store. I finda ton of empty wite-out bottles and buy a whole bunch of them. Now im back at my house and i take my plain black base bikini and try to figure out how to affix my empty wite-out bottles to it. And i do. And i take pics on someone , and i send it in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
also you could use makeup and other aspects to make it a really cool picture

The short on will be too much of a challenge for me. Being a night nurse I'm fairly disconnected with the world and our time period, i think, i dunno. But i definietly will give the bathing suit a try since I need a new one and hate the store bought ones (I need a good one piece). Now if only i cna find some good material for under 15 bucks.

ok so if i do this it will be my 1st project threadbanger...
SO, my question is do we have to spend money or can we just use things aroud the house that we already have?
because im pretty sure i have everything i would need to make my project and i wouldnt like spending money on something i already have.

You'll need to have the judges' email addresses so you can send them the pictures and descriptions. Just make sure that the entries are kept anonymous. This means no names and no faces in the pictures (also no linked pictures as they are no longer anonymous once they're linked to an individual's flickr/photobucket account). Glass__Onion used to make it really easy by sending a separate email for each entry and numbering them (e.g. "Entry 1", "Entry 2"). Once all of the entries have been sent out, the judges will each send your their scoring for you to summarize and post.

Don't forget that faces cannot be shown in entry pictures. In the past, entries showing faces were supposed to be disqualified.

The first challenge goes right over my head >< so not participating in that one...
For the second - I associate "couture" with expensive fabrics and largely hand sewed.
I'd *love* to make a bathingsuit, but there is no way whatsoever that I'll ever wear one I've handsewed in the water. I don't trust my handsewing enough - it's sure to end up in some really embarassing moment :/
As for being made with expensive fabrics - seems pointless for me.
Prehaps if you could provide us with an exact definition for "couture" for the second challenge?
I know a lot of discussion has been happening, but which are we going by? Ryan's?
And how much of it should be handsewn? More than 50%? Or at least a part of it?

Alright the first project just sounds flipped great and the 2nd one is just making me happier.
Questions thou....
To show off the bathing suit must i wear it to show it in the pictures?
Must i wear the first entry to enter it in to the contest depending how reveling it is?
