so, this all started last year when i decided to see how fabric sharpie would work if i used it to draw on some plain white tees...
then i started making more and more and more and right now ive made around 45 shirts (i can post more pics if you want), selling some to my friends and stuff. Not much sewing involved, but i thought it would be cool to show what ive been doing with some clothing pens and clorox bleach pens. id actually like to start a serious online business with these soon. hope ya like!

the bleach does, and sometimes it doesnt like to cooperate...but the sharpies dont. it just took a while to get used to drawing right on the fabric.

those are incredible. the image design is as well thought out as the placement.
even more so because they're one-offs. start doing those on recycled buttondowns and blouses and skirts and dresses and trouserpants and whatever and i have no doubt you could be living off your work rather quickly.
oh, and if you aren't on etsy yet, git yr butt o'er there.

(could you make a mammoth or a walrus on a medium size shirt? let me know how much you might want or what you might want in trade, i make a mean photo-process silk screen.)

07-07-2007, 04:46 AM
thanks again all! a tutorial is on the way...hopefully.

xDirectorx: yeah, i used bleach pen on those shoes and made another pair in black. The black actually turned red and as you can see the brown went to yellow! its pretty fun to experiment and see whats gonna turn to what.

emerald & superdoofus: thanks for the tips, ebay is a great idea, but right now i have my hands full with local friends who want them. i really want to mass produce these (but then i guess theyd lose the appeal :( ). by the end of this summer im looking to have a website of my own up selling handmades, and maybe silkscreened ones for cheaper.

miss.green.tea: these actually stand up in the wash pretty well. all i do is make sure to iron them before the wash (im sure theyd be fine without it, but it doesnt hurt) and then i usually machine wash them in load together, all inside out, and pretty gently. even my shirts from about a year ago still 'pop'.

ok. so, like i promised, heres some more:

Ok, so I'm guessing that on the bleached ones, you use like smudging and like rinsing re-applying to get the grungy edges and brighter spots, but how do you get those smooth blends on the sharpie ones?

Also, just wondering, exactly what kind of sharpie are you using?

I am just FLABBERGASTED at your shirts. Very inspiring to me....I think I'm stoked enough to go experiment more with Sharpies (I've done a little, and loved it....but this is a whole other level!) 07-16-2007, 01:21 AM
once again thank you! im running out of stuff to post tho!

Josierean: well, with the sharpies you have alot more control over the values, it feels completely different than working with the bleach. its harder to get the lights with a brand new pen, but ill show you how its all done with my tutorial (hopefully put together by this week). as for the sharpies, i use Rub-a-dub sharpies for fabrics.

DBXP: actually, each shoe has a different face...but on purpose. symmetry is for squares.

barnes: thanks! on the piece ur talking about i went through 4 sharpies...so yeah, it was alotttttt. right now i only sell them to close friends within the area...around 15 so far and i dont know when or how ill go big, its all a little intimidating. thanks for the offer about making a website, but as for right now, i need to get my bearings down. video tutorial is on the way...its tough tho, this week im getting my wisdom teeth out :(

krussell: thats actually a great idea...i may have to try it, but i just dont want to ruin a perfectly good pair of jeans :/

ok, heres one i did tonight...for myself (after a long line of shirts for other people!) and i really liked how it came out.

I have an old shirt from a few years ago that i drew the Emerica shoes logo on with a normal green Sharpie. It's held up really well, despite the fact i bleach that shirt. It's only slightly faded. Do you think regular Sharpies would hold up well enough, if shirts were washed normally, perhaps on a gentle load? Just throwing it out there. Great work.

That's awesome. Perhaps one day you could send them a gift shirt or something. Be like, this is what your music inspires so MAKE MORE DARNIT. Heh.

It would probably take up way too much of your time, but you should seriously consider opening up comissions. I know lots people who would be clamoring for your stuff.

i use the back of a 19'' x 24'' drawing pad and stretch the shirts over it. they fit over pretty well and it keeps the drag to a minimum, but you really just need to get used to how the pens handle.

These look great.

Get yourself in business. These should sell well. Start with the street fairs and the like.

But you can't make any real money doing them all by hand. So pick a few designs and have some shirts made. Sell them cheap. Sell the ones made by hand for twice the price. Custom stuff sells in the right markets.

oldsoul: you and i have very similar ideas. i want to try and screenprint some of the better designs, and then do handprinted ones for more cash, because god knows that i would get nothing done if i did everything by hand.

miss.green.tea: Khols! but they rarely have black Hanes, so for the black ones i usually go to H&M and buy them in singles for like $4.

abi123: put up some pics when you get done!

heres one i made today for someone. took me forEVA to find the right type of black shirt that could take the bleach well.

foundmyfrisbee,

try automatic dishwashing liquid and a brush instead of the bleach pen. Or better yet, go get some of the new watercolor brushes that you can fill the handle with water and squeeze to use with your colors. You could put a little less or little more bleach in them and use them on your shirts. Then it might not matter what color the shirts are - you could tailor your bleach mixture for them.

Automatic dishwasher liquid has a ton of bleach in it, but it's thick and it will stay put. So you can leave it on.

The only thing you have to think about is that bleach weakens the fibers in the shirt. So you need some way to buffer its effects.

Look at hanes.com You can but shirts directly from Hanes. Walmart is cheaper on some items, but you can get what you want from hanes.

I really think you should look into some discharge paste for your bleach designs.

It is designed for fabrics and is really similar to what comes out of bleach pens, only thicker and it bleeds less. It is fabric safe (unlike most other DIY bleach methods) and works as soon as it dries and you iron it.

The question is, what would be a good way for you to apply it. Brushes work well but you might want something more pen-like.

Load3r: hmm, ill have to look into that, sounds like it might work really well with brushes. at one point i tried using brushes with the clorox to get more detail, but alas, i love drawing way more than i do painting, so im more comfortable with the bleach pens.

SoxRox1804: the fabric sharpie does not wash out, if you take care of the shirts properly.

i made another tee today for myself, because i was feeling a little under the weather and had nothing else to do. hurr it is:

i'm really amazed that they don't bleed, too. i've decorated shirts with sharpie before and they have definitely bled.. i guess consider yourself lucky? or consider me unlucky?

and DEFINITELY start an online store!! they would sell like hot cakes. your'e an amazing artist.

Please marry me.

ok, ok, just kidding. but ummm ...
omg i love you.

i also have another question for you - you know, besides my proposal -
i made 1 new shirt for the tutorial and got all 40 min of it on video.
any chance this tutorial will be available online in its pure, uncut, 40-minute glory? perhaps on Tudou, or split into parts that fit Youtube?
I'm sorry, I know it's a lot to ask (for you to upload it all), but I seriously love your work so much, I'd download that video. And end up watching all 40-minutes in utter awe and hunger for wisdom.

Thank-you for being alive.

francesca: hahaha, thank you. well, in the final edited tut. i have all 40 min sped up [in like 20 sec], making me look like a friggin robot who just drank 10 redbulls. but, if thats not enough and you need all 40 detialing minutes, then i can see what i can do with youtube. lol, trust me, its not THAT interesting. glad that i can please you :D

Capt!n Plan!t: for the record i am a huge fan of The Brave Little Toaster. beautiful movie.

uhhh, so yea, i made a myspace for my stuff.

go. theres nothing there that i havent posted here, but im hoping to use it as a starting ground for actually selling stuff. im thinking about [soon] putting up a few shirts on ebay, and then advertising them through my myspace, so friend me or w/e and ill send out some bullitens when im actually gonna sell some.

and yeaaaah, i know i dont have any friends yet, but thats because i dont want to spend the time going thru countless strangers and friending them, so get the word out anyways!

Hey, just wondering, I know you said that you have washed your shirts inside out and they have turned out fine, but are any of the pictures you've posted been of shirts that you've already washed? I was just wondering because I got ahold of some fabric pens, and did some designing onto a couple shirts, one of a logo from a bike shop in town for a friend, and another repairing some washed off detail from an older shirt I have. On both, the ink faded quite a bit, and I was wondering if you maybe had the same problem sometimes?

Oh, and I finally got my hands on a sharpie rub-a-dub, Wal-Mart doesn't seem to sell them anymore around here, but one of the books and supplies stores near my college campus had one left!

foundmyfrisbee
09-02-2007, 06:13 PM
daheadlesshero: please PLEASE dont think like that. i hate to take the 4th grade art teacher stance about everyone being 'special & unique' but really, fasion and art is what you make of it.

plasma: hehe, thank you. i could make a joke about being old right now but i wont.

Josirean: Actually, the first few pages of this thread have shirt pics after they have been washed quite a bit. Actually, the bats and the t rex pictures were taken over a year of being worn and washed. i hate to say i have not used any other fabric pen besides those sharpies, so the brand could be the problem. try out the rub a dubs and see if that works better.one thing you can do is make sure you iron your shirts after youve drawn on them, it helps the ink set. also, i like to wash mine inside-out on a gentle cycle which also helps to preserve the drawings. hope that helps.

ok, so, heres the latest from yesterday. my wrist is actually really starting to hurt from all this drawing so i may need to take a break :P

it usually takes an hour or two. but this last one took a little longer because it was harder for me to try and make it semi-symmetrical by eye.

first of all, dude you have a ton of talent and those shirts are awesome.

I've got a question about using the white shirts. I don't know if you've run into this, but I used to like wearing plain white undershirts a lot, but after a couple washes, they get a nasty yellow ring in the armpit area. I read once somewhere that it was due to aluminum in deodorant, but I was just wondering how you avoided this since you obviously have nice shirts that are over a year old. Thanks man.

you know, a couple years ago i had the same problem, where some of my white tees would be a little yellow under the arm after wearing them for a few months. however, it stopped and ive never had the problem with my drawn on shirts, maybe due to changing my deodorant. lol, its funny, becuase i actually looked at mine to see if it had any aluminum in the active ingredients and sure enough, it didnt. but i looked at a free sample of some that i had and sure enough, it had aluminum, but i dont use that kind, so im pretty sure thats what could be causing it. lol, that was a really good question, thanks man.

offhegoes03
09-04-2007, 11:20 AM
cool man, thanks for the response. I guess I need to find a white deodorant that doesn't have aluminum on it so I can make the white undershirts last. I got 6 new ones, so I need to wash them and find some time to cut out a stencil and print a shirt or two. I think a Michaels near me should have those sharpie rub a dubs, so I might use those to add some more detail after stenciling. I saw some "fabric markers" in a store the other day, but I think it's paint in a marker, so not sure if I want to use those for color. Can you find those colored fabric pens in stores or do you order them online?

Your talent scares me. I swear, my jaw dropped when I first saw your shirts in one of the videos. I couldn't believe you really drew that, and I still kinda don't. Don't get me wrong or anything, but they are just so nice! They look as if they're printed! You must tell me your secret. :P

I am also wondering how long you've been drawing and how you got so well at shading. I'm horrible at it. Anywho, you are so amazing and inspiring; pretty much perfect I should say. ;)

10-10-2007, 04:54 PM
k folks, once again THANK you for keeping this thread alive with you nice comments, you guys rock.

so to answer some questions:

Corrine490: I do the shading with different sharpies, some of which have more ink than others, so i can get darker values with fresher pens and lighter ones with older pens.

mexiconkid: Nope, sorry, at this moment no requests :[ as much as id love to, i cant.

OK, SO. sorry to say, once again, no new clothing to post, ive just been busy with other forms of art...BUT i will be back in business in about a month, so wait for it :D

also, i dont know of how many people know of Johnny Cupcakes? Anwyays, if you dont, look him up and check out his success story on his clothing line, ect....well, he came to SCAD to lecture on his clothing line and i was actually able to meet him. SO that being said, im going to keep in touch with him and try and get some pointers to start my OWN store. Yes, this will be alot of work, but hes been a real inspiration. once again, tut should be on its way soon...hopefully? plz? :P

thanks guys!

don't worry man, your store will hit the city hard. You'll prolly be sold out in the first week. And you have a ton of fans here that'll support you. Ask Rob and Corrine for some publicity help if you haven't already.

Quick question:
Whenever I draw with sharpies on my shirts, I have trouble keeping the shirt steady enough to press kind of hard with the sharpies. Do you weigh yours down, or attach them to anything to keep the fabric from stretching out of place?

It is not as good as yours, but hey, I am practicing.
I don't shade as much as I 'imply' shading. I look forward to your tutorial.
Also, I ironed them afterwards. Is there anything else you do?

Your shirts have insane detail, especially considering the fact you used marker on fabric. I really like the orange shades from the bleach on the black shirt.

Maiflowers
11-14-2007, 02:28 AM
HOW DID I ONLY SEE THIS THREAD NOW!? *le sigh* I'm not a fan of the orange bleach (unlike hybridmonkey :P) but I do like the read bleach. I like the more simple designes and I like how you use colors to exentuate the focal point (shoot. Somebodys been listening in art class). I like all your purple shirts.

What I've noticed was when you use deep colors (like that purple one above) it spreads a bit through the whole shirt. so that peacock(sp?) one is tinted purple, it doesn't look bad but its just something you should look out for when you do other shirts. Also on one or two other shirts I noticed a finger print.. naughty naughty.. now put your gum on your noes and sit in the corner and think about what you did.

Why don't you ever do the sleaves?
