I did this before I moved out of my apartment since I wanted to get rid of alot of clothes. It worked out pretty well because I made it as a potluck and a BYOB besides the stuff I made and put out. I invited all my friends and when we were done we took all the clothes that none of us wanted next door to the theft store.

I highly suggest that everybody should do this.
