It's okay, I'm sure you'll get better.
The Ramones
Black Flag
Gogol Bordello
Big Hand
Rage Against The Machine
hmmmm.....
Well, we need Bill Withers on the list, because Use Me is quite possibly the best American song written to date...
We need Atom & His Package, to represent my old stomping grounds (Dispatch would have filled that slot, but they sold out)
Gabe Dixon Band helps cover the contemporary singer/songwriter, showing kids that music can still exist outside of the corporate mold.
Keller Williams, because he is a god.
And finally, The Roots. If you need to ask why for The Roots, then you are a lost cause :D
@korupt_trash: Nice job with the Gwar! :)

I'm going to have trouble with this one. I'll go with the ones I'd feel bad if there entire music catalogue was deleted off the face of the earth and I'd never get to hear 'em again. Like, I would feel knife-through-the-heart devastated.
Beatles
Portishead - Dummy
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water
Peter, Paul and Mary
I can't think of a 5th one.
***Edit:
I think if Psychedelic/Garage music and the New Romantics were blasted off the face of the earth I would be one sad little puppy. Or Motown.
I tend to think more about songs I couldn't live without:
Dave Clark 5 - Glad All Over
Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine
OK...I swear they're not all "5's". Hee.
Portishead's - Sour Times
Garbage - I'm Only Happy When It Rains
I'm very weird. I either like the bubblegummiest bubblegum pop ever, or really dark depressing moody emo stuff in minor keys and huge bombastic cords.
Hector Berlioz. I cannot live without Berlioz.
Or Lionel Hampton. I just can't doooo iiiiit!

I USED to be friends with John Balicanta. My friends were in a band in Grand Rapids, MI and used to play at a bar (now closed) called Ten Bells. Lola Ray would play there ALL the time because John's gf worked there. She is who Like a Tiger is written for.
I could talk Lola Ray with you FOREVER.

used to be as in i haven't seen or really talked to him in years. when the bar shut down and my friends band broke up there weren't as many chances to see him. Every now and again we run into each other and I get to catch up. He is one of the nicest guys i have ever met.
and a DIY-er.
He alters/makes his own pants. and probably more.

yeah, emo is just... not very good.... I kinda like some screamo because its actually good music, though. But here's my policy on emos: I don't care what music you listen to, how you dress, or who you hang out with. But if you think your life sucks or nobody understands you, you need to be kicked in the face. YOUR LIFE DOES NOT SUCK. Your girlfriend broke up with you. ooh. Somebody is making fun of you. aah. This is not something to kill yourself over. It happens to everybody. Frankly, if you live in a house, if you get fed every night, if you can LIVE EVERY DAY WITHOUT FEAR OF GETTING SHOT DOWN, your life is great. I mean, if you can afford all that emo clothing, your life obviosly is pretty good.

Well i mean its like "oh well you like country music you must suck" kinda thing. People don't even talk to people who listen to different genres. But I also see what you mean. I tend not to hang with hiphop/rap people, not because they listen to it, just because of what those people generally act like.

So I'm relatively bored... wondering what music everyone here listens too?
I guess to justify this, it might be an easier place to find someone with band stencils/shirts/etc etc???
obviously, I'll start this one...
Mostly Eels, White Stripes, and Wilco, any bluesy rock like that,
but also Queens of The Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, Radiohead, Mr. Oizo, Sufjan, Iron & Wine, Maps, Viva Voce, Kings of Leon, the Kooks...
that's about what i listen to the most often.
so...
how about all of you?

Right now?
Guitar Wolf from the Japan, but I don't really hold that against them. The Ramones, The Stooges, and Patti Smith; the Phillipine Violators, Brain Failure, and Hang On The Box; The Ghouls, The Riverdales, The Queers, The Hanson Brothers, Black Flag, Bad Brains; X-Ray Spex (Polly Styrene was local,) The Clash. Full Blown Cherry. Dr Feelgood. Gogol Bordello.
And The Distillers for the past couple of days, because I seem to have fallen in love with Brody Dalle, but I'll have to see how Spinerette sounds. I'm not really a fan of the Public Image Ltd. aesthetic.

Spinerette's got their single up on their page if you havn't heard it
it's great, but not a very good forecast of what they're gonna be in my opinion...
(I do think the Brody/Josh combo could be great if they start a band)
and if you live in maryland and can wait a year, GOGOL BORDELLO should be at FETTOFEST!!!!! (I know the sister of the guy who runs said -fest, it's a great concert)

I'm against pretentiousness;
I'm against Prog Rock.
I'm against a lot of Modern Art.
I'm against Experimental Music.
Well, maybe "against" is the wrong word; but I can't take a lot of enjoyment when in order to understand something, I have to buy in to the creator's idea of what it is, rather than my own feelings.

Hi, I've been trying my best to further my musical tastes and I need some suggestions! I love things in other languages and anything a cappella or acoustic. Mostly anything with great harmony as well.
I love The Beatles and The Who, The Cranberries, and I'm not a fan of things like Fall out boy and death cab.
So, songs you can't live without? Classics you think everyone should know all the words to?
I'd love to hear anything. :]
M0ose
01-06-2008, 02:48 AM
if you like acoustic and you like the occasional folk sound, i really like Corona Borealis. Another one is SIG:AR:TYR (runes) and all of it is acoustic
As far as other languages, some Japanese pop/rock bands I know of include Dragon Ash (they did the end song in 'Battle Royale', Orange Range, the Pillows. Some German bands that are kinda cool are Deichkind, Jeans Team, and Fettes Brot (my favorite of the three)
LadyRobinhood
01-06-2008, 08:10 AM
Oooh, I love you!!
The Beatles are my favorite band!!
Well, I have very wide tastes, since I love the Beatles, and also like death cab, but here are some bands that I could not live without(warning: Most of them are indie!)
The Kinks(You have GOT to hear their song, Alchohol. It is really, really good.)
Belle & Sebastian(These guys are amazing. I looove his voice, and their lyrics are really addicting...)
The Cure(80's band, I believe... my bro got me into them. They play really decently)
Modest Mouse(I have yet to meet a person who has listened to Modest Mouse and not liked them, and, I really actually don't want to meet that person. Modest Mouse are awesome! I saw them live in November, and... they are brilliant, both lyrically and instrumentally)
Sufjan Stevens(This guy plays like, 20 different instruments! He's quite a looker, too, as a bonus)
Paul Simon(I think I really prefer him alone better than him along with Garfunkel, though Simon & Garfunkel DO have some pretty killer songs. I'd advise listening to Simon's Graceland album before anything else. That one is prolly his best, in my opinion. It's beautiful.)
Um, yes, I really enjoy listening to the sort of music somebody's dad probably plays in their car on the way home from work, y'know, stuff like Joni Mitchell, Shane Jackman, Nora Jones... if you like Mitchell and Jones, I'd suggest Fiona Apple, and vice versa. Apple is reeeeally good.
kisukejazz
01-06-2008, 11:18 AM
So good to hear that you are not a fan of modern rock (i.e Fall Out Boy). They are just sooo annoying. I am more of old school rock person, with a bit of modern indie. Songs I would like to suggest are in brackets.
I like Metallica (Seek and Destroy, Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, One, Battery)
Megadeth (The Mechanix, Angry Again, Peace Sells, Trust)
Led Zeppelin (Communication Breakdown, The Immigrant Song, Stairway To Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song)
The Doors (Light My Fire, Hello I Love You, The End, People Are Strange, Waiting For The Sun, Whiskey/Alabama Song, When The Music's Over, Crystal Ship)
ACDC (TNT, Jailbreak, It's A Long Way/If You Wanna Rock n Roll, You Shook Up All Night Long, Little Lover)
Oasis (Lyla, Don't Look Back in Anger, Wonderwall, Champagne Supernova, Little By Little, The Importance of Being Idle)
Klaxons (Totem on the Timeline, It's Not Over Yet, Magick)
Franz Ferdinand (Take Me Out, Matinee, Michael, Darts of Pleasure, 40" Feet, Do You Want To?, Walk Away, Evil and a Heathen, Eleanor)
Interpol (Evil, Slow Hands, Obstacle 1, Untitled, Take You On a Cruise, Roland, Not Even Jail)

My suggestions (none are a capella or other languages, but they're still AWESOME). I've put comments and song suggestions in parentheses.
~of Montreal (I love these guys... listen to "A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger" that's my favorite, or "Bunny Aint No Kind of Rider")
~Beirut (They're from New Mexico but have a lot of Eastern European influence. Listen to "Elephant Guns" or "Bratislava" or "Rhineland")
~Rasputina (They are SO under appreciated- it's cello rock, but don't make judgements till you've heard them! Listen to "1816, The Year Without a Summer" or "Hunter's Kiss")
~Bright Eyes (I've heard Bright Eyes is popular on the mainland, but definitely not here. Listen to "The Calendar Hung Itself" or "Four Winds")
~Sufjan Stevens (A Beautiful Voice. Listen to "For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti" or "John Wayne Gacy, Jr."
~Modest Mouse (Definitely listen to more than just the hits. I'd suggest "Parting of the Sensory", "Bukowski", or "Gravity Rides Everything". Don't listen to this with your grandma, there is some swearing...)
~Arcade Fire (Awesome live. Watch some of their clips on YouTube. I'd suggest the songs "Rebellion (Lies)" and "Neighborhood #2 (Laika)"
**EDIT**
How could I leave Scissor Sisters out?!
Scissor Sisters (I've heard they're popular in Britain, but not so much in America. I'd suggest listening to "Kiss You Off", "Laura", and "Intermission")

I've met roughly half on the bands and artists that you've just mentioned.
I love everything.
My latest obsession would have to be Seal. I was listening to him on the train yesterday and I was caught in my own little day dream hehe. Other peeps I recommend would be THE CRIBS, We Are Scientists, The Sunshine Underground, British Sea Power, Bloc Party, The Wombats, Guillemots, The Holloways, Cold War Kids, Air Traffic and of course the Babyshambles. :)! Pete Doherty's solo acoustic material is amazing.

Wait, are you talking to me? And when you say "met", do you mean actually met?! Like talked to?! Because if you are, not only are you my new hero, but I'm also extremely jealous! Bands I like hardly ever come to my state. Aerosmith and the White Stripes (two bands I like) were going to come, but Aerosmith was on a different island. They both cancelled anyways, so it doesn't matter now.

LadyRobinhood, are you sure you're not my clone?! I mean, seriously, where I live people normally don't like the Beatles because they're "too old". Familiarize yourself with the following:
The Mamas and the Papas (harmony)

Imogen Heap (all around awesomeness)
And if you also get eargasms from amazing chord structure and prgression, check out these composers:

Eric Whitacre (Choral Music)
David Holsinger (Band/Orchestral Music)
Debussy (Piano/Orchestral Music)

but anyway, Disturbia, by Rihanna has been stuck in my head all week, and i love it
but i found this awesome band recently after going on the hunt for steampunky things
Abney Park
they're pretty epic, i think most of their newest cd is all steampunk influenced, but some of their older stuff is more gothic, but like, Lestat's violin playing gothic from Queen of the Damned, and not so much "GRAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWRRRR DIEEE!!!!!"

I've had this song for a while, but lately I've been playing "Only Skin" by Joanna Newsom over and over again.
Most recently, I discovered "Mayfly" by Rasputina, "Avalanche" by Sufjan Stevens, and "Hypodermic Imagery" by HumanWine. I've also been listening to some oldies- Lots of Bob Marley (I LOVE him), Talking Heads, and Kraftwerk. Then there's my world music; right now I'm mostly listening to Oliver Mtukudzi and the Pogues.
I am the definition of eclectic. It's impossible to really put your finger on what I do and do not like in music, and I listen to a wide range of stuff from all different genres.
