A few years ago a friend of my was on vacation in Florida and she bought a really neat pair of socks, called sandal socks, they have no toes, but are sewn together between the big toe and next biggest toe. She got me a pair and I loved them so much I wore them until they were thread bare and eventually I lost one of them. A couple years ago I stumbled upon the one lone sock and wished I had another pair!
So I took some of my current socks and cut off the toes, hemmed the edge (with a stretch stitch - or if you don't have a stretch stitch just stretch them out quite a bit when hemming the edge) and then put them on your feet, figure out where you want to put a stitch and pin or mark it, take them off, and put a few stitches in place there! and viola! sandal socks!
I made a few pairs of these, because I am a dork and just love socks with thong sandals! and I think they're pretty cute too!
Well a few months ago I got the idea that I should knit a pair.. and here are some pictures of how they turned out! If anyone is interested in the steps I took to make them let me know and I'll post it!
What do you guys think?
If I was going to make them again, the only change I would make is to make them tighter around the ankle, and a darker color... the cream shows the dirt a lot

Sorry this took so long to post, but here it is:
I'm a US shoe size 7, and I'd say the ones I made would fit a 6-7
I knit them with size 4 double pointed needles.
if you want to make them bigger or smaller, add / subtract as many sts as you'd like, but I'd suggest using the same number of sts for the heel.
On the ones in the pictures, theres a bit of a detail around the top of the ankle, which I'm not sure I'd keep, but for that:
Ankle:
cast on 80 sts (I split them on the needles 20, 40, 20) and do 2 rounds of k2 p2. then k2 tog, p2 together for one round, until you are down to 40 sts of k1, p1.
If you don't want to the top detail, just start by casting on 40 sts distributed on the needles 10, 20, 10 sts on needles 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Work 10-15 rounds or more, up to you.
Heel Flap:
knit across needle 1 and 2, then turn. [I like to put the sts from needle 1 and 3 together on a needle here which is now needle 2]
next row, working on the wrong side, sl 1, p19
row1: *sl 1, k1, rep from * across and end with k1, turn
row2: sl 1, purl across, turn
row3: sl 1, *sl 1 k1, rep from * to last st, k1, turn
row4: sl1, purl across, turn
rows 5-20: [rep rows 1-4] 4 more times
Heel Turn:
row1: sl 1, k10, ssk, k1, turn leaving 6 sts unworked
row2: sl 1, p3, p2 tog, p1, turn, leaving 6 sts unworked
row3: sl 1, knit to last stitch before gap, ssk, k1, turn
row4: sl 1, purl to last stitch before gap, p2 tog, p1, turn
rep rows 3 and 4 until all stitches are worked.
should end with 12 sts
Gussets:
knit across 12 heel sts and pick up and knit 14 sts along edge of heel flap, then knit across needle 2 the 20 sts from the ankle that have been patiently waiting, and with needle 3 pick up and knit 14 sts along the other side of the heel flap, continue working with needle 3 and knit 6 sts from needle 1. you should now have 60 sts with 20 on each of 3 needles.
knit to last 3 sts on first needle and k2tog, k1, knit across needle 2 and on third needle k1, ssk, and knit to end.
repeat this round until you have decreased back down to 40 sts. (or desired amount).
knit to desired length, and I did the last round in k2 p2 and cast off in the same manner.
Then, put them on, mark it between you big and other toes, and with a darning needle, sew a few stitches in place, weave in all the ends and you're done!
Post any questions you have! I'll help the best I can!
