Hey all,

So ladyjanewriter and I got to meet yesterday and it was simply lovely to meet another Thread Head in person!

So, I want to throw this out there...I know we all live in different places, some of you across the ocean and all, but that doesn't mean it's not possible for us all to organize some event where we could all meet and play. I mean, if Lord of the Rings fans can do it why not us?! :p

Here are my questions to get the ball rolling:

1. Where would be a good place for everyone to meet? Maybe NYC since that's where the show is based?

2. When? Next year? Summer perhaps?

3. What could we do activity wise? Classes? Workshops? Tours? Take in a show?

Please throw out your thoughts, suggestions, concerns and the like.

For a group of DIYers this should be easy to figure out. :D

Hmm , if we did NYC rob , corrine , and some of threadbanger staff could possibly join us.
alothough some people may consider it a little unsafe , like people joining the forums just to go to the party??

That would totally be awesome.

We would have to get at least the main people of the forums there.

Like DBXP
and ladyjanewriter
and jelfish
and pinoyblaze
and you mammasasss
and coffee
and others.

MamaSasss
08-13-2007, 05:12 PM
Ok, this is good so far.

How about ideas for activities?

I could brush up on my crochet techniques and offer a workshop in that.

Are there classes/workshops that anyone else would be interested in? We could take a poll and try to organize a schedule based off that.

sewittogether
08-13-2007, 05:14 PM
We could go raid goodwill and dollar stores and fabric stores.
or we could do a sort of project-runway thing
but we could help eachother
and there wouldnt be models and we wouldnt have to finish.
NYC is convienient for me.
Omg! We could do it at etsy labs if they let us...

haha I'm in VA too, but no car or anything
technically not that far (7 hrs driving..? from the 757)

some people could sell their stuff.. haha
it could work with the show, like afterwards, there could be like.. an auction or whatever for them to buy whatever you showed them what to make

oh! you know what..
foundmyfrisbee could go.. and make a few of his shirts
and have a raffle for em.. since he can't mass produce them

Wow, we're getting some awesome ideas!

Since a couple people so far have mentioned the Project Runway thing I would suggest that that be something we'd take submissions for. Anyone interested in participating could submit ideas and we'd (dunno who would make the decisions yet) choose maybe five or six people to be in the show. They could build their clothes, present them, choose their own models (or be their own models) and then explain the inspiration and such behind their ideas.

Then we could also have a separate fashion show/tutorial. What do ya'll think about that?

Also keep in mind guys that if we actually decide to pull this off and are able to do so it wouldn't be until next year most likely. You'll have time to save up and figure out to get...wherever it is we're going to host it. :)

sweet...Corrine and I have definitely been talking about a party since we started this whole thing. We'd totally have to have it in the NYC and rent out a space. Corinne suggested To set up a sawp-o-rama-rama there and I think we should totally get some punk bands. Maybe have a whole day thing with tutorials and then we can all film a show together where the ThreadHeads take on New York. I think the bigger this forum gets the more of a reality it becomes....summers in NY suck, I'd suggest next spring.

Ooh statistics

At 806 members for approximately 70 days of the forum's existence, you average about 11 new users per day.

A 12 percent increase resulting in 806 members would mean an increase of 86 members in those 5 days, or about 17 members a day.

So your rate of new members in those 5 days is about 150% the running average from the existence of this forum. Impressive indeed!

NY is fine with me, it's a 6-hours drive south, as long as I don't have major exams (school semester next summer too).

And Sewit, what kind of safety issues are you concerned with? You're right that this is something that has to be considered...

Personal safety issues, then.

Well, all your standard internet personal safety protocols apply.

What I would say would be... If it's a public event which is being used for the thread head meet, then it's just a matter of recognizing each other.

If it's an event being organisised by and for the thread head meet, you'd want to use a registration system, and keep as much information as possible out of the public domain. Private messaging and email trading, etc, could be used, and you could even go so far as to use an e-ticketing system for "entry."

But I do think you're worrying excessively; nobody would even be lurking on the forum unless they had at least some interest in the subject; and even at 700 members, this site is very small.

So basically, use some common sense, don't give out personal details, and don't meet in private.

guess who

i live in Fl. i can't make it that far yet. lets say NC.

MamaSasss
08-13-2007, 08:29 PM
As far as safety issues go, I was originally thinking this would be a registration type of event. Like a conference. In order to book a venue and bands, make schedules and whatnot we'd have to know how many people are actually going to be there. So, one step at a time, kids. :)

And this is the part where my brain stops. Keep coming up with ideas for what we can do!

So far we have:
- Fashion show
- Classes
- Bands/overall party
- Maybe visit Etsy labs
- Goodwill road trip

What else????????

Same Problem here

there's just too many of us westerners not to join in on the fun
We should have our own west coast branch of the threadhead event

Since some of you don't think you'll be able to be there, here are two options...

1. We think of a place more in the middle of the country to gather,

OR...

2. One of the activities could be a viewing of videos from all of you who can't make it and you can give your own tutorials.

Thoughts?

(I love the live feed idea...if someone can figure it out and get the $$$.)

Well, seeing as I am in Canada....seems doubtful...though sounds like great fun!

NYC is great, have gone a couple times, but I also remember that the hotels right dwntown were CRAZY expensive. If somehow I did manage to drive down, I think I would have to sleep in my car after paying for the gas! haha. Though New York is fun. I can be in New York STATE in about 1 1/2 hours, but NYC is way more, about 9 1/2 hour drive

Should try to run it like a convention, charge small admission fee to the general public to cover costs of a hall rental (for the tables, fashion show etc..)

(As for trying to figure out for locations we need that feature I have seen on other forums where there is a map and all the users add their home location, so when you look at the map you can see where everyone is from. I think perhaps google makes such a feature ??? Then can see where most people are from. )

And who knows, if it is way into next year I may be really rich by then, and can take my private plane!

Just noticed this and did a quick scan. Few things..

1) I would love to go back to NYC. I miss the east coast... :(
2) I would suggest making it at least 18+ for an age limit. That way no one is liable for "exposing minors to danger" and such.
3) I am so going to drink someone under the table!
4) Hotels in NYC aren't as bad as people think. I have usually found th best deals in areas like Murray Hill (but I <3 Washington Sq. Park)
5) to the people worried about randoms showing up.. it is not that big of a deal. I have been to many a forum meet before. The easiest way to take care of things like that is:
a) Have some members meet before hand, that way there are some people you are familiar with
b) Sign up sheet. Not on the sheet (with your real name) then you are not getting in

To the VA people.. Don't cheap out. Just take the train up to the NYC.

But What About Saftey Issues!?!?!?

Duh! You take care of them with the Safety Dance!

I realize it would suck, but should (<insert deity here> forbid) anything happen to anyone under 18 (be it an injury, they get alcohol, they do anything they shouldn't), they people over the age of 18 could (and probably would) be held liable and could be sued.

It is nothing personal, but I have known people to be screwed over by a parent who did not like the fact that their child was going to a meet. If people under the legal age were there, I would then suggest that the lawyers for next new media would draft some sort of indemnity agreement that the minor's parents would have to sign.

^^ ok then why would you have to bring alcohol, its a convention not a club, teenagers go to conventions all the time like otakon(anime convention) and you dont see people getting sued there. make them sign a release form then when you enter you take full responiblitys for your action, no one else is liable for your actions execpt your onself

wait thats not fair half the people on here are underage and alot of the people contrubuting are underage, sewittogether, dxbp (sorry if i spelled it wrong lol) so it wouldnt really be a gathering becuase half the people would be not allowed to come

Then let's make it in Montreal or Toronto, that lowers the legal age to 18 !!!:p Isn't legal age in the US 21??? (We kinda make fun of that over here...)

And with a bit of hope, the change rate could be good for you in the south!!!

All right.
I'm putting a stop to some of this right now before everyone gets too ahead of themselves.

I'm going to encourage all of you to leave ideas and questions for me for what we can do on this thread. I am keeping a list and I'd like to hear more ideas so if/when this really happens I'll be able to pull together an awesome killer schedule for everyone involved (and after a brief conversation with Corinne...I will be the one organizing the activities. There. Happy? You got a little more information) :D.

At the moment, stuff like safety and 18 and under/over aren't something we can control. I'm still waiting to hear back from Corrine about certain things and once I do we'll be able to plan more adequately. I know you are all really excited about this and I don't mean to be a bummer by any means. I just want you all to know that I have thought about the safety stuff and under age stuff. Right now, I don't think it's as big a deal as it needs to be made out to be. Don't worry. I've got my thinking cap on, but I too am waiting for more info so we can move forward. Patience, my babies. :)

So, until I am able to divulge more info to the rest of you...please keep throwing out those awesome ideas for activities! Name some bands and PM me their contact info if you have it! If you have connections for activities, PM me about that too! You've all come up with some wonderful creative things for us to do! Keep 'em coming!

Whatever happens I promise to find a way for everyone to be involved. I promise. Witch's Honor. ;)

Love,
*M*

Just to let everyone know...

I am now talking to Vanessa about this as well.

We're currently talking about sponsorship. Once we have an idea of what that will entail and if we can get a budget and location this might very well be a "go".

So, please keep sending ideas. Ryan has already sent me some. (Thanks again!) If you have ideas about sponsors I'd love to hear about them, so PM me if you have suggestions. It's always good to have a back up plan.

I need you all to help me out with something.
I need to know if any of you have a clue as to how much some of your ideas would cost.

I'm forming a budget.
So, if you can break down (into dollars) how much each piece of your activity ideas would cost I will love you forever and you will save my head from exploding.

This is extremely important, especially if you want this thing to happen......... ;)

08-21-2007, 10:36 PM
how would you break down a fashion show?

goofipinay
08-21-2007, 11:11 PM
A fashion show..
It depends on the clothing, if you're gonna sell it..
The models (to wear them) if you want any.. lighting for it (if needed)
The location, and how long the fashion show would take; how many people (how big it has to be)

Blah blah. I realize this is a DIY fashion show so my knowledge might not help. bwahh xD

MamaSasss
08-22-2007, 03:52 PM
Ok, let's assume that people would make their own clothes for a fashion show and that they would model the clothes themselves. So, really the only thing would be to find a room, make a runway of sorts, music and lighting. A microphone for an MC would be helpful, too I suppose.

Coolness.

Even a tape-marked on the floor "runway" might work? Like, walk between these two lines to the X marked with bingo tape, strike a pose, pivot, come back.

ladyjanewriter
08-22-2007, 04:15 PM
Hey, wait, wouldn't they have spare space at Etsy labs for a quick walk down the "runway" and twirl?

It could also be an etsy labs cross-promo. Just tossin that out there.

I usually work on hip-hop/r&b/trance/house/ambient

If people wanted that type of music for the runway, then I would be more than willing to mix up some music for them.

I should be able to attend, just depends on the dates and my work/wchool schedules. (Maybe I will luck out and get an internship in NYC {if that is where it will be})

a runway wouldnt be too hard i guess
just a raised path down the middle of the room
you even stack books ( whoa thats an idea)
or........

we wouldnt need models
just people there modeling their own stuff
and other peoples stuff

i could do some crazy makeup
if we would want that
i know i would for a few outfits
'uhh
what else

lights
in the stenciling an stitching episode
you see rob and corinnes setup
for lights
they are cheap at the local hardwarre store
i think like 8 bucks ( but i could be wrong)
they look like tihs

the ones hooked on the chairs

lets see what else?

how would we hook up the mic and music?
a stereo?
we would need lots of speakers

uhhhhhhhhhhh

thats all i can think of for now

but i have another question
would we all have to live in hotels for however long?
or how is that going to pan out?

Those are clip lights and yes, we could get those rather easily and cheaply.

As for hotels, I'm thinking this wouldn't be more than a weekend thing.
Friday - Arrive, evening event
Saturday - Tours/classes/party
Sunday - Tour/class/farewell, departure

There are cheap hotels to be had and people can always bunk together, which often tends to be one of the more awesome aspects of a thing like this.

Neff - That would be awesome if you could both mix the music and be there. A fashion show is definitely on the list. ;) Would you be interested in possibly being one of the bands/artists to play if we have a party during the weekend?

If this thing folds out [WHICH WOULD BE AMAZING!] we could organize "living situations." Aka, who stays with who or something. I like the simultaneous ['scuse my spelling] party idea, because not everyone will be able to get to NYC [though that'd be awesome! obviously]. Those who can't go to NYC [probably me as well. -.-;] could set up a ThreadBanger party together in a big city somewhere.

PM me the info for the band if you have it.

I'm not sure about things like charging admission and such simply 'cuz I'm still talking to Corrine and Vanessa about where the money to host this thing would come from. Once I know the preliminaries of all that jazz we'll actually know if that is something we would be required to have or not.

So, the short answer is....I don't know. Don't worry about it yet. :D

If people involved in the fashion show were interested in selling their stuff then people should start to speak up about it now. That will help determine if we have auctions, raffles and the like. So, who (that would be there to attend the event and model their clothes) would be interested in selling their stuff?

We don't have a list just yet. If any of you have a preference on how you would like to be included as far as selling stuff, doing the fashion show and whatnot PM me. It's really hard to keep track of who wants to do what in the thread. PMs are much easier to handle. :D So, take a look at the post I posted earlier about what the schedule could possibly (will most likely) consist of as of now and see what you think you can contribute to those things. Then lemme know!

As far as us having to pay for things....once again...I dunno. Still waiting to hear the word on money. You guys have to remember that until we know what the money situation is (as far as sponsors go) we won't know what we're really going to be able to do. So, I know it's hard at this point but please try to be patient and please keep sending your ideas and throwing out your support for the whole thing. :)

For the time being I would highly encourage any and all of you to PM me with questions that have to do with the money thing right now 'cuz like I said above, it's easier to keep track of those concerns in PMs. This way I can keep a list of questions to ask Corinne and Vanessa when the time comes. If you'd like you can also PM asking for my email address and I will gladly give it to you and we can communicate that way.

I'm going to go eat cake now. PHEW!

Vanessa and I are still talking, but she wanted me to let everyone know that Next New Network wants to make this happen for us. They have to figure out costs and such. I just sent them a list of everyone's ideas that would most likely be plausible for a weekend event. I'm just waiting for feedback from Vanessa now.

So, be happy kids. Things are looking good! :D

Here's something to think about :

If any of you are interested in doing a workshop tutorial PM me with
1. What you would like to do a workshop on?
2. How long would the tutorial be?
3. What supplies would be needed?
4. How much do you think it would cost in supplies?(Give me dollar amounts, please!)

Also, I would encourage at this time to hear about tutorials that can be done without sewing machines. I just don't know at this time if we'd have any. So, think beyond the sewing machine. :)

I'll let you all know more when I have more news.

Ah....excellent.

Just so everyone is aware, I have a list of things kind of set already. If you go back through the thread I think I posted the list. Stuff like fashion shows and vendors are already on there. We've actually covered a lot already with this thread, so I think everyone will be happy. But I seriously need to know who's interested in running a workshop. I'm not sure how many there will be 'cuz NO ONE HAS OFFERED TO TEACH ANY YET!!! :p PM me kids. STAT!

Maybe if you petitioned for specific workshops to encourage people to offer. I'm sure someone would step forward and be all like "Oh shiz, I can do that!:D"

Personally, (though I know for sure, for sure that there is no chance I'd be able to attend) I would love to see how Ryanmoore made that Drama Queen necklace he posted a while back.

Not yet.
We're waiting on word from Next New Networks.
Once I know what's going on with definite plans I'll post a new thread.

For the time being I would recommend taking the time to look through the rest of the thread. :)

just throwing out a idea mabe after you raid the good will shop and come back (next day or whenever the next segment is) the you all have to transform your purchase using only basic material( spraypaint, stencils stuff like that) for whos is the best then take befor and after pic and vote on whos the best and viewers from the video could vote too

XD I second that. Now all I have to do is convince my parents to let me go...heaven knows that'll never happen.
"WHAT?!? YOU WANT TO GO TO NEW YORK TO STAY WITH A BUNCH OF PEOPLE YOU MET ONLINE?!?" [mom]
 *shrug* "Who's paying for it?" [dad] XD
Ahh...I can just see this unfolding. My dear, dear mother is slightly overprotective...I mean, for some reason she's convinced that somehow the internet immediately becomes evil after 11PM..I just don't get it.

I'm already saving up :D I already got like 70-80 bucks set back! Just do that and make sure it's over the summer and-

IDEA! This may sound realllllllllllyyy wrong, but why not have people team up and just share hotel rooms? Just an idea I just thought up...

Also if any bands playing need a guitarist, just send me the tabs, ight?

Two things:

1. As far as workshops go, I am throwing out these topics: a) Jewelry b) Shirts or bags and c) Non-fashion DIY. There are your boundaries for workshops. PM me if you have something you'd like to give a tutorial on. (Keep in mind that there mostly likely won't be sewing machines available.)

When we get closer to actually setting a schedule and I know better who's going to be able to make it to the event I'll have a better idea of which workshops we'll actually be able to do.

And 2....

Vanessa is talking to Etsy Labs. :D
Happy Wednesday kids.

I could easily do "metalwork" with Aluminum Tape as a non-fashion DIY. Lemme price it out n get back to you! I bet using scrap cardboard as a surface for the tape could work well.

Essentially, use a pen that ran out of ink as an embossing tool, tape the aluminum tape to the cardboard, put cardboard on an old magazine as your embossing pad, press down while drawing to emboss. Similar to foil art, but WAAAAY cheaper.

Sorry, I'm no help. The "Overprotective Mom" lurking deep inside me is coming out on this topic. Darn it, I always knew I had one of those inside me! It's one of the many reasons I haven't had kids, yet.

I think my imaginary daughter could go when she was 17. I think I'd trust my imaginary son at 16. God that's sexist of me! OK, so I'll round it up to 17 because then there'd be one year of driving skills.

crystalzemoose
09-05-2007, 08:43 PM
well,18 is when you're an adult. i think you have to be like 21 to rent a car. as for going places,my sister's 13 year old friend goes to cali to see her dad by plane on her own.

ladyjanewriter
09-05-2007, 08:51 PM
-- 25 to rent a car. A lot of companies raised the age for that. Stupid, isn't it?

Also, depends on your state. Some states have different ages where you're considered adult, but I think most are 18 now?

Plasma

ladyjanewriter

If "Le Tampon" is where I think it is? (can't pull up the frappr map, but just realized what US city sounds like "tampon,"), there should be a lot of cheaper east coast flights to NYC.

crystalzemoose

ladyjanewriter

I live in the south (Texas) so me heading up to NYC is highly unlikely.

But I'd love to go to it none the less. And who knows, maybe I could go! Considering I'm hoping on getting a job at Lowes or Home Depot. so thats 12 $/hr and one week I may top out at 200-250 dollars so who knows really?
