So we're starting up a design club at school as soon as our principle gives to go ahead.
I was wondering if you have any ideas for stuff we could do.
here are mine:
watch some project runway episodes and look at final collections.
have a few challenges
Give them a theme and everyone works based off that theme and the winner gets a prize.
make prom dresses and sell the giving the proceeds to charity.(Probally after everyone's gotten it going pretty good, since they're not easy)
have a runway show on funday at school to raise money for club (if we get the ok from our principle.)
That's all I got for right now we're also gonna go through how to draw fashion templates and color harmonies and things like that as well as go through how a sewing machine works as well.
Any ideas for things we could do would be greatly appriciated.

Your going to sell the proceeds to charity?
That's a bit redundant.
I think I know what you mean though.

make prom dresses and sell the giving the proceeds to charity.
This is what I was talking about, BTW.

I like sewerdude's idea, I'm sure they'd appreciate getting help with the costumes.
I wish we could do something like this at my school but there isn't any clubs/extra-curriculars at my school.

well instead of donating the proceeds to charity, what about giving it to your school?

Sounds like my fashion class, except my fashion class sucked...wasn't fun. We learned the basics of sewing, but it was more theory than anything, and we had to stick to patterns from simplicity. No homemade patterns, or free patterns, or from anything else but this dumb little poster with limited sizes on it.
Rant over. =P
This is a little more specific, but for the challenges...you could do a recycle challenge. Like not recycled clothing, but actual RECYCLE. Once you guys get better.

You can make wall hangings for the school, help repair the marching band uniforms, make little items for school pride and sell them at sporting events (arm bands, hair scrunchies, fleece scarves, hats, etc.).
A quilt to raffle off would be great. With that many people in one place, making all of the blocks would be really easy! Sometimes quilting requires rotary cutters, cutting mats, rulers, etc. BUT... try paper piecing. Basically, you sew onto the paper, turn the fabric, press, sew more fabric on, turn, press, continue. Quilt blocks also make great inserts and panels for clothing.
Here's a site with TONS of paper pieced block patterns and instructions: http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html
Some of the blocks can be blank where students can write with fabric markers (I heard gel pens don't come out of fabric either). This might be a good idea as a memorial of the graduating class.

You could branch off from sewing and do jewelry making like earings and necklaces. You can also do that stuff with shrinky dinks and plastic bottles to make your own beads that promote school spirit, costuming, or just look great. Oooh you could get teachers and students to donate pop tabs and bottle caps to make stuff with people always are drinking pop and stuff in school.
