Need help.
I want to do something with some old coins.
Like crappy pennies you find in the gutter.
Maybe somehow they can be created into buttons for a stylish piece of clothing?
Help me out with a tutorial... or suggestions on how to make buttons without killing myself.

If you find something you can glue on to be used for a shank - they can easily be made into buttons ^^

You can drill out holes with a small drill bit if you have access to a drill press

Uhhh I'd just like to point out that defacing american currency is illegal :[ so if a cop or someone sees you, you might get a fine... or something... I dunno. But if you just glue it on to something else that'd be fine 'cause you could use the penny afterwards (technically) but avoid drilling holes or anything.

I'm not sure about your currency, but I have a bunch of 5 Yen coins, the sort with a hole right in the middle that I've been itching to use of something for a while.
But for normal coins you would need a drill. (http://www.curbly.com/Chrisjob/posts/1684-DIY-Coin-Buttons)

i would suggest Gorilla Super Glue or something similar. The specs say it's good for metal, and it sets really quickly, so you don't need to clamp it like regular Gorilla Glue.
that said, I have never used it. but i have the same issue, that i want to use these old pennies i found, so maybe i'll try it out and report back to you. :)

Look up the instructable on how to turn a penny into a ring.

Hot glue on some eyelets (not grommets) or drill some holes. The law doesn't really care if you deface a penny or even a dollar.

it is only illegal to deface currency if it is used to commit fraud.

Do not use a nail gun on pennies!!!! You will break the nail gun and possibly hurt yourself doing it!
Pennies are worthless... unless they've changed the ratios of copper that a penny is made with it's technically worth less then one cent. But as it was mentioned, no one is going to fine you or arrest you for putting holes in pennies. If they tried, you could say you got them like that, right ;-)
But I do like the idea of pennies as buttons. I think you should use a drill press, as mentioned above. There are specific drill bits made for metal and also specific drill bits are needed for a drill press sometimes. If you goto a hardware store tell them you'll just be drilling through 1/8" copper. They'll be able to direct you to the right drill for your needs. It might be a good idea to bring in a drill bit that you know works for the drill press if you end up using one. If you're doing small holes like smaller then a pencil, I would suggest purchasing a few bits since you will likely be breaking a few of them in the process.

You can pick up a little doohickey at Fire Mountain Gems that's cheap and does a dandy job of putting neat round holes in anything reasonably thin and metal...like coins.

And like mrbob1000 said, it is not illegal to tamper with US currency as long as the intent is not to defraud the government.
