People on my other forum are jerks. Just thought I'd share. People on this forum are so nice and helpful, and even when I'd posted my ugliest of ugliest DIY crap, there is always someone who will give me a nice comment or something.
In my writing forum, many people are nice, but some are just pretentious jerkfaces. I posted a sample of my writing for critiquing, and I don't mind if people don't like it. That's fine by me. But SOME people leave me harsh criticism for my writing with no evidence that they actually READ it. They're like "This story makes no sense. Why is there a purple tree?"
(There is no tree. There is no purple.)
Just needed to rant. I must emphasize that most people are helpful. But the one or two of those just make me mad, because they're so condescending and rude, but there's NO indication that they even read it. It's like they just need a little kiddy sibling to pick on or something.

I sympathize with you. In fact, this is really the only forum i use anymore. It's a haven of safety in the brutal cyber world ^_^

I mean... why are people such @$$faces? I posted a thread asking for advice because a friend of mine asked me to critique his writing. In fact, I didn't think it was very good. So I posted a thread asking people for tips on whether or not I should tell my friend at the expense of his feelings. This one buttclown replies "You just want to hurt your friend so you can feel better about yourself. You're only posting this out of guilt because you know it's wrong. You feel bad. And you should."
I mean WTF maters?

I think no matter where you go you're going to run into the odd person who's just nasty for no good reason. This forum has been pretty good although even here I've seen some critical and unnecessary remarks. For the most part people seem to stick to the old saying of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". :)

I think it also helps to have great moderators like LadyJane to smooth things over.

I think what happens is:
Mean internet people iz mean.
Some people don't understand the difference between constructive and destructive criticism. They don't honestly mean to be mean, but were raised around really critical people.
Some people have huge egos.
Some people have no confidence and have to lash out.
I think we're pretty good at trying to cut down on meanness. It's super-important to me, personally.

I know what you're getting at. I've been to forums where people just are mean for the sake of being mean.
Heck at college there is a white board that every now and then a new question gets put up and then people write up answers. I usually didn't do it but I'd pass by it so I'd read the new question.
Once the question "What improvements to the college do you think could be made?" And at the time I had a prof who was a real jerk. He'd tell us to state our opinions on something, even call on us in class and ask for an opinion but then he'd mock us. And I hated how he was so unapproachable because of that. I mean I was so afraid to be even a minute late for his class that if I wasn't going to be able to be ten minutes early I wouldn't even go. And there were lots of students like that.
So I wrote up on the white board stating it would be an improvement if this prof wouldn't do these kinds of things to us in class... cause really it was just a mean thing to do.
The kind of response I got to that was "suck it up Princess", and my favourite, "We suffered through his class and what he did just fine so you can to."
Also though I've seen people who've written terrible terrible things (many examples can easily be found on fanfiction.net) and most of the time people are jerks to them. Though there was one that I found where a lot of people were being helpful and giving good constructive advice and the person who was getting it didn't take it too well.
That's the funny thing about the internet. People are mean, almost everything is a rumor, and those who are trying to do good often get shunned.
This is probably one of the only forums I've seen thats really supportive about everyone. I agree that its because we have good mods but I think its more to the point that we all have good people here.
We're all here to learn and we just want to help each other out.

I'm not much of a forum person anyway. Just this one and the writing forum. There are so many helpful people there that I try to ignore the jerks, but gah, sometimes people are so rude. It's a forum for writers to support fellow writers, but we have people who are so condescending that it's unreal.
I also stay out of fandoms, as can be found in fanfiction.net. Case in point, there was a particular anime I was fond of, and a bunch of people from ff.net had gathered into a livejournal club about it. The shit hit the fan. We had people fighting over pairings. Pairings! In an anime! I thought I kept to myself about it--I only read the fanfics people posted, and if I didn't have something nice to say then I didn't say anything at all. I take writing really seriously, and I know that ff.net is full of people who just want to write and have fun, so I keep my harsh criticism to myself. Well, two years ago, people were so jerky on the forums that I just stopped associating with it.
A week ago, someone linked me "anonymously" to a thread that is STILL ACTIVE TODAY talking about me personally and how much I, and a few of my still-friends, suck. After two years! I don't know if it's funny or just sad, because I don't even know who this person is or what she's talking about.
Oh, internets. roflcopter.

Oh wow, thats awful. *nods* I know the pain of anime pairings. I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan and hung out at ff.net all the time. I still go and look up some fanfics now and then but yeah.... I stick out of the groups and discussions though. The last thing I need to hear is fights over if people should use the Japanese names or the English names or who would be paired with who.
I haven't updated my own stories in quite some time. :p I really should do that. http://www.fanfiction.net/u/206073/Mercury_Guardian if anyone happens to be curious.

I keep seeing these commercials for people talking IRL as though they're on a chatroom. The funniest was a teenage girl telling her friend "You smell, and you're ugly. And your mom's a whore." And the girl's mom is right there. It was hilarious, because it's true. People use the internet to be jerkomatics since nobody is looking them in the eye.
I get this funny image of that anonymous blogger walking around the street going "Lauren is stupid because she doesn't write fanfiction with us anymore" and trying to get strangers to sign the petition.

Another thing is that people say things on the internet they would never say to an actual person. Like there is no consequence linked to what they say so they don't care if they are harsh or whatever.

i have to agree with you that people here are very nice
but
some people love putting others down so much, just doing it in person is not enough, they do it over the interweb. also, people do come across more harsh than they mean to be... probably because there is no laughing off.
you can't let this crap hurt you
and if it does, don't pour your soul out online
:) take care
