what do you mean by 'escillies'??
Oh! I see you mean 'I often fall the stairs' or something like that?
I'd say : je suis souvent tombé de l'escalier, but that's just me ;)

Oh Miss_Gagarin
When I went to Montreal, my friends taught me French Canadian swear words. Do you like Les Cowboys Fringants?
Miss_Gagarin
08-09-2007, 01:06 AM
Of course I know them!!! Everyone here does! :D But I prefer Mes Aieux and Les Breastfeeders (I know, I keep plugging'em here).
Did you come to Mtl for a special event, like the Jazz Fest, les Francofolies or Just for Laughs?
And what are those swears? I can teach you more maybe!!! :p
Are your friends studying like in McGill or Concordia? (well, I s'pose your friends are american and I've never heard of an american in a french university...)
Jelfish
08-09-2007, 01:09 AM
I know some people at both, mostly McGill. And yeah, I went for the Jazz festival, and another time just to visit. I actually stayed and walked around in the Francophone side most of my time, i.e. east of le boulevard St. Laurent.
Lots of fun :)
ps. tabernac!
Jelfish
08-09-2007, 01:12 AM
oh I was also taught (and I may be spelling these all wrong)
ca lis!
ca lis de tabernac!
sacrement!
that's all I remember

That is good! I'm glad you liked Mtl (I grew up there). Shopping in the 'friperies' on St-Laurent and Mont-Royal is a guarantee of fun, then drink a cool beer or a glass of sangria on a 'terrasse'... that's always a good day.
I'm going to Québec city next week...
Now the new evil words : Câliss, Criss
Btw, did they told you that our modern swears are religion-inspired?

yep! I got the history lesson and I was thoroughly intrigued and amused.

Funny story: I got a parking ticket in Montreal once. I glanced at it quickly and didn't see any writing. Since I'm used to seeing the writing right on top of the ticket, I assumed it was a warning and just kept it as a souvenir. Then a few months later, I got a letter in the mail asking for payment. Needless to say, I took out that ticket and saw the rip line :o

yeah :( I figured the last thing I needed is for me to fear for my car's well being if I ever decide to drive up there again. Also, even though it's technically a different country, I think they might have the authority to affect my driving record. But anyway, it wasn't a whole lot and I don't want Montreal to hate me or my car ;)

Good! So you can try Québec, Sherbrooke, Gatineau-Ottawa, Toronto, Lac-St-Jean, la Gaspésie, etc...
(I love my corner of the earth, did you guess that?)

I want to, but I really don't know any French. It was already rather difficult in Montreal, and at least half the people know some English there.
One time in Montreal, I was at some coffee shop with a few friends. One of them tried to teach me how to say "I would like a cup of orange juice" because that's what I wanted and the shop was deep in Fracophone territory. Well, I remembered the "je voudrais" part, but forgot "orange juice" as I was asking, so I just sort of dragged it on- "je voudrais... uhhh uhh um orange juice?" I get a blank stare from the woman at the counter. My friend refused to reteach me the word and just laughed as punishment. I eventually saw an orange and a glass nearby and pointed at the two and she got it.

Sorry to hear about that! I have a friend in Edmonton who's afraid to come for the similar reasons... but I'm surprised she did not understand, for orange juice is 'jus d'orange' (ok, jus is pronounced jü - the ¨ is to be seen as an umlaut for the pronounciation) so it's quite similar. Still, maybe she was an anti-english frustrated. But that's evil, especially since you tried french!!! Ahhh (slap on forehead) some people are so narrowminded!!!

Maybe. We were like the only Anglophones in the place. Seeing it written, it seems pretty obvious how similar they are, but when my friend said it, I guess it didn't register with me. I don't think she was being mean. She may have just lost track of what I was saying because I switched languages. She may have also figured out what I was saying when I pointed to the oranges. It was really all in good fun; no obvious detection of mean-spiritedness. And I tipped :)

You make me think of that time on the Cote d'azur, my ex-bf and I went to a Quick Burger ( a french fastfood chain). We ordered in french, and the clerk answered 'I can understand english' with a really thick french accent!!! I wanted to tell I did not, but ex-bf said angrily that we spoke french, so I did not have time to say it!!! :(

In my french class today, we went to tv5.org to do stuff, and I found this: Word Tetris! How cool is that?
I don't know very many French words, but I thought it could be fun.
