went to my local thrift store on Friday because I had the day off and lo and behold someone I knew was behind the cash register, so I scored!
got a huge bag of buttons, the bag said $4 but she said, "you ain't paying that much."

Me, too. as I was laying my goods on the counter I saw the bag of buttons, on a shelf far behind the cash register. I stopped talking. Then I asked are those buttons? I want those buttons. Please? and she brought them to me, and I knew they were all mine from that point on.

Almost did a little happy dance. almost.

Gosh, buttons are only surpassed in the "cool things to put on random fabric" area by keys.

Does anyone know where i can get some old keys?

Sweet, I get lucky sometimes and other times I totally strike out. My last go I landed a shoe box full of vintage 1950's thru 1970's patterns. I haven't picked them up yet, the owner is holding them for me until tomorrow. I can't wait. I know they are all too small but I may copy them or I may just frame the packaging and hang them on my wall. I may sell them. IDK but it was too tempting to pass up. I love the art on really old patterns.

For keys, the most likely spot to score them is with older friends, people your parents' ages. Old folks like me generally have duplicates of duplicates for all kinds of keys including tiny little diary keys and some from every door we ever rekeyed and every car we ever bought. We think we'll remember what they used to unlock, but we never do. So I have keys in my desk and in my kitchen junk drawer, only I know what they all are for and still have the locking devices. My fancier old keys from 75 years ago or more are all dedicated to craft and DIY stuff like windchimes and shadowboxes, except the ones that actually work in locksets I also have.

You can also buy bunches of keys on ebay and places like that.

Batch, may I suggest that you thread or pin the same style and color of buttons together? That makes it easier if you want to replace all seven buttons on a shirt with some of those old ones. You'll know if you have enough if you sort through them first.

That is an exceptionally good buy for that many buttons, although I can't really see the quality of them. It looks like you have coat buttons among them.

I have literally thousands of old buttons. I keep glass vases filled with them by color, and sometimes I have tiny little ziplocs of particular styles. A few vases seem random colored, but there will be another reason to put them together like the all bakelite, or MOP, or glass buttons.

I touch everything as I look, and as soon as I felt this one, my mind said, "canvas, sturdy... shopping bag!".

Yeah.... $5 does seem to go a long way at Savers or Salvation army.

Great finds! I should ask if they keep odd buttons and stuff.

You should make a habit of going on a regular basis, even if you have no cash. Just so you can get to know the staff.

I love buttons, too. When my grandmother died, years ago, I was given her sewing books and her jar of buttons. That was priceless. The woman had been sewing since she was young... so there were buttons that were as old as she was. Let's see, she was born in the early 1900's, so yeah, it was a wonderful gift.

I feel like such a dork never replied to your post, and this is an excellent idea. Thank you.

I feel akin to a pirate when I am lucky to score some cool swag, damn good feeling.

thank you most kindly for thinking the bags are cool. Kinda weird how I made it, just toodling along thinking about things I had seen and demonstrated and it just flowed all together.
