i have to run to school, but here's the link.
i'll edit this later with more information. :)
it's a pretty horrible video.
http://www.youtube.com/v/Q7FZKOfTVmQ
things i didn't mention in the video:
SEAM ALLOWANCES!!!
REINFORCED STITCHING!!! (read below comments by Jelfish)
OKAY I'M BACK.
here are a few pictures that might help a bit more.

HOW TO MAKE THE CUTOUTS:
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa185/maniacalmickey/tutorial021-1.jpg
FOR THE BACK PIECE: FOLD A PIECE OF NEWSPAPER IN HALF AND FOLLOW THESE MEASUREMENTS
A: shoulders. the measurement of this depends on what you want. i suggest about an two inches away from you neck to your shoulder. make sure that the two parts line up and the measurements are the same.
B: collar. make the collar about an inch or an inch and a half, and make sure that when it's folded over that it still equals the back shoulder piece EXACTLY.
C: sides: measure yourself 2 inches down from your armpit all the way to your desired length of your vest. make sure that the sides on the back piece equal the side on the front piece.
D: sleeves: for this part, i recommend measuring a shirt or something.. if not just make a cresent shape connecting the shoulders to the sides.
E: measure the bottom of your favorite shirt on the bottom seam, divide by two and there you go.
F: i guess just draw a cresent shape.. i don't really know how to clarify this one, it's up to you and your measurement skills. :) just make sure that it WORKS FOR YOU.
p.s. don't forget seam allowances.
for the front pieces:
-make sure the sides, sleeves, and shoulders are all the same measurements
-where the buttons would be, make sure that the front piece is more than half of the back piece, so that when you make your two pieces, they overlap.
-the actual shape of the collar is up to you, and depends on how steep or high you want it.
-to add the point at the bottom, ..umm, it's up to you how pointly, long, or short you want it. :) be creative.
-dictate where the buttons will go.
BAM you done.
hope this helped.

Great video! I would suggest for reinforcing your seams that you back stitch just a bit at the beginning and end of each pass with your sewing machine. This will lock in the threads at the end and keep your seam from slowly falling apart.

i'll be trying this. and i bet my brother will too. :D thanks.

You were saying how you usually make them reversible...do you put the collar on when you do that?
I'm currently designing one, and I wanted to make it reversible, I think I've figured out how, but was wondering about the collar.

I'm dying to know how you got the shape for the paper part?

Hehehee! I love the ending!
I think the next time you do a tute, you should skip the music when you're talking, or dial down the music a little bit. It was a little hard to hear what you were saying in the intro and the outro.
I also loved:
"SPECIAL THANKS TO:...Nobody helped me."

I'm currently designing one, and I wanted to make it reversible, I think I've figured out how, but was wondering about the collar.
for my reversible ones, i make the collar in a way that it's not sewn down like what i showed in the video, i actually just make the line where the collar would be thicker and fashion it in a way that i can just fold it over, depending on what side i will wear the vest..
i hope that helps!
i'd love to see finished pictures of your project ;)

I tried it but I messed up the measurements somehow and it fits all wrong. It's tight around the arms and my upper body, but loose around my waist. lol it's also too short, but I keep forgetting how long my torso is. I guess, someone with years of experience (instead of one week) would know better. But it was just a prototype, I plan on making it bigger and making it with the real fabric. Until this, here is my futile attempt:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/28/831829/fail.jpg http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/28/831829/back.jpg
sorry for all the lack of clothing. It was so tight, it wouldn't fit over any other piece of clothing. Should have another attempt in the next week. By the way, it took about 4-5 hours to do.

hey it's a good thing you practiced before the real product though!
it's good that you learned something by making it with practice fabric first. :) actually for a newbie you're doing veryvery well and i'm impressed! keep up the good work.
IT TOOK 4-5 HOURS???? O-O ohmy.
it usually takes me an hour at the most because i slack..
and well.. i guess i don't have to make the cutouts by scratch every single time.
it looks good to me though. :D

Thanks! Although this project was difficult, I learn something new about making clothes to fit me and shapes and concepts and such. I made the real deal! And it is awful, but that is no fault to you. I think my fabric was too flat and not fuzzy enough. Here is the final product:

Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! i'm going to make sooo many! It seems pretty simple and i'm sure i can figure it out but i know there are alot of people on the board who are not very experienced in pattern making so if you could post a how-to on how you made the pattern i'm sure it would be much apreciated.
thank you ,

Hey! Well done! You know what? It looks fine, and for a week at it, this is quite impressive.
AND, definitely salvageable. All you really need to do is to lengthen the arm holes along the side seams, take the side seams in a little in the lower part (use pinch and pin?) and maybe some nice darts in the back for structure and fit.
But it looks great! Don't write it off yet! And your next attempts will be even better. :D

well for a basic size XS or S it only takes less than a yard, but i buy a yard anyway just in case.
so i figure a medium would take from 1yard to 1 1/4yards, and a large 1 1/2yards.

Great tutorial and I can't wait to try. How do you make them reversible?
haha well it's basically just taking manipulating the same technique that you can find in other projects (such as the Messenger Bag Tutorial) where you make two identical pieces, sew them together on it's outline on their opposites sides while leaving a gap, and then turning the whole thing inside-out, and reforcing all the sides with one continuous seam.
..haha if you understand that... yeah.

you have to make sure that your sewing machine can handle leather, and that you have the right needles/thread to hold up leather..

Yeah, my arm hole sticks out weirdly... I've got to rip out the side seam (well, cut it since I serged it) and try to take it in a bit, because I didn't make my collar low enough either and hopefully that will fix the arm hole problem... I'm going to fold the edges of the arm hole inwards too, and stitch them down to make the shoulder seam smaller.
Live and learn. Should've tried with crappy fabric first...
Great tut anyways though.
