This is for everyone who doesn't have money or dirty dirty evil underworld connections for the sacred Adobe Photoshop.

Point your trusty web browser (http://www.firefox.com) over to www.thegimp.org (http://www.thegimp.org) and feast your eyes on some open-source goodness. Free download and tons of documentation. And because it is user maintained, there are somewhat often updates and people always working on new gadgets in their spare time all across the world.

I'll be happy to field any questions.

Anyone out there a seasoned gimp pro?

Also if you want open-source vector program (like Illustrator) then look no further than www.inkscape.org (http://www.inkscape.org/).

awesome, if you guys are use to the photoshop layout you can check out http://gimpshop.blogspot.com/ And download the latest version of gimp with a layout setup similar to Photoshop. That means if you need to follow a tutorial for a certain project it can be easily reproduced to be used in Gimpshop. FREE is great isn't it?

BTW Load3r I've been playing around with Gimp for a while now. I'll post up some of my Gimp Works in Progress Soon.

Awesome. I think you've convinced me to start using GIMP. Adobe's been getting a bit too corporate-interested these days, especially when they ate Macromedia. Thanks for the videos.

But adobe eating Macromedia wasn't all bad.. It got rid of the horrid rogram that was GoLive!

:D I was a big Flash fan when it first came out. It still makes me cringe to see it called "Adobe Flash" now.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must finish drafting the terms of my acquisition of this tasty sandwich. Cooperate mergers sure whet my appetite :D

You mean it got Adobe out of having to compete against a competent web publishing program.

I still think there's nothing better than photoshop. you can download it from torrents. I mean, people here in Romania work hard to put food on their table, they don't afford such expenses to buy too expensive pc programs for their kids. Oh, well, it's the world:)
I do love photoshop and don't know what I would have done without it.

true... I couldn't afford it either (Middle/lower class background) If I had the option, i would always use photoshop but for now I'm being good and legal (eck...whats wrong with me?! lol)

I used my wonderful underworld connections(my brothers employee discount and Christmas money) to acquire photoshop but before that I was quite proficient at GIMP. It's great for logos, and internet stuffs. I made loads of brushes and gradients and a few filters for it if anyone wants that stuff.

i use the gimp not only because it rocks (and i've been using photoshop since v. 2.0) but because it's opensource and keeps in line with the d.i.y. ethos. it takes a second to get used to by adobe users, but fuck-all if it's not damn near the same performance.
and why pirate cs3 when a much more user-based/user-influenced product is available for ABSOLUTELY NO MONEY AT ALL.
swear to god, i love the gimp and all it does and all it stands for.

If you like Gimp try the modified version GimpShop - it's a simpler version made to work as much like photoshop as possible

http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294

it's basically a hacked version created by my friend scott, hope you like!

Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/windows/), or Gimpshop (http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294), which is a modification which changes all the menus to match photoshop.

Okay I have read everything I can find to read on Gimp and Gimpshop, but am still very blonde about it... Do you have to have a 'program' to make stencils?

goofipinay
09-25-2007, 12:37 AM
No, you can use just Gimp alone to make the stencils;
What I did was to do all the steps in the stencil tutorial; except on Gimp.

Let me finish my english homework (reading the declaration of independence and "interpreting" it!) and then figure out the steps I did on Gimp

Okay..

Open the picture you wanna use as a stencil

To make it black and white:
Image > Mode > Greyscale

Follow the instructions on the tutorial
(Color the background white; Use the dodge & burn tool)

For the threshold, instead of going on Illustrator...
Tools > Color Tools > Threshold

Then just experiment with BOTH arrows...
One deals with how much black there is; the other deals with how much white there is

It's not EXACTLY the same...but it works
I just printed out most of what I wanted, and then just edited in (or out) the parts I wanted to cut off (since it was only minor details)

Hey, does anyone know if Gimp will make tiles? Photoshop does it - it will automatically turn what you're making into a tile that will repeat so the left edge will meet up with the right edge and the top will meet up with the bottom. I don't know how to describe it better than that...

I also have a question about gimp. I have it, but after a couple of times using it, the little separate window with the layers on it (i dont know exactly what its called) doesn't show up anymore whenever i start gimp. Anyone know how to get it back up?

GimpShop is great! I would definitely recommend it. A lot of the buttons are similar to PhotoShop, so when you do get PhotoShop, it will be familliar.

Another program to try is Acorn.. it's only $40 bucks!

Gimp is a great program, I've used it for about 3 years now and love it, it's slowly improving with each new version, hopefully it's going to have full tablet support eventually. I know this program fairly well so if anyone has a question feel free to drop me a PM.
