A fascinator is one of those little hat-like thingies that's not a hat, but a bunch of things like feathers and veils on a hair-comb:

How do you make yours, scrabble?
I've clustered silk flowers and sprays of light weight beads with a few feathers. I fasten them to a comb with thread, sort of like the simplicity link ladyjanewriter gave. I've also used twill tape to secure to the comb.
My sister has to use french hair pins to secure the larger ones to a chignon.
I'd like to use netting as a veil or demi-veil, but that's a little trickier. It works to back a floral arrangement though.
I'm thinking of using a variety of hair accessories for the base. I've already done embellished elastics of many types.
One idea I've had is for Bike Week. You can find these skinny leather tubes with snaps that wrap a braid to keep it neat when riding a motorcycle. If I make one of pleather or fabric and sew in a small comb at the top, I'd have a lot more variety.
