Do you think that they are any good for projcet like these here on thread bangers?

Hi, Cupcake! Well...not usually, no. The trouble is, they're just really not strong enough, and they skip stitches, and get jammed. I've never heard of anyone being super-happy with the cheapy little ones. That hand-held one that you see on TV is even worse.

I think that it makes more sense to ask around if someone has an old machine they're not using, or seeing if you can buy a re-furbished machine from a reputable dealer. Or Craigslist, or a yard sale, or whatnot.

It's certainly a start and a great way to see if you'd like to spend more money on a solid machine. You can get a good one for under $100.

if it is the type that is like a real sewing machine only on a small scale it is ok to learn on. They may handle small lightweight projects like t shirt weight fabric. I wouldn't try to sew denim. The hand held ones are garbage. I did see that wally world (WalMart) has a full size machine for about 80 bucks. I don't know how good it is but it has to beat a hand held any day.
