View Full Version : What is art to you?

Okay, after my last post I decided I should post some thing for the community. So I came up with this, because I think it would be fun to see other peoples opinions on the matter. So here is the question(s).
1)What is art to you?
2)What is good art in your opinion?
3)And what is bad art to you?
To me art is self expression of a person, be it clothes, or writing, or drawings/paintings. Its art if it is heartfelt. So personally I don't care how good a drawing may be, I may admire it, but to me it isn't art if the artist didn't “feel” it as they drew it.
Good art in my opinion is a mash up of the old and the new. This is especially so in writing, for nearly everything has been done (especially in fantasy) but if a person can make a heartfelt story with good characters and a good plot, but borrow from other sources, its still art.
Bad art is some thing that some one just throws together, some thing made for money alone, and some thing completely taken from another person (like weak fan fiction).
So thats my opinion on the matter, but what is yours?

art is anything that comes from creativity, with a good deal of effort put into it.

My feelings about what is art is really naiive, I just realized. It's basically anything creative that doesn't have to do with math, science, or actively pursuing money.
Which is kind of stupid, now that I think about it. What if you make these amazing textile patterns based on fractals? That's math.
And some methods of making paint have some basic ideas behind chemistry. Like using eggs and ground pigments to hand-make the paints for frescoes.
And then there's the whole art vs. commerce debate. Was Jeff Koons a crappy artist b/c he was in it for the money, and commissioned other artists to create his ideas? I tend to think so. I really hate this guy, personally:

I think so, personally. But, then there's the glass artist Dale Chihuly, who can no longer blow glass himself, b/c he lost one eye, and glassblowing without full depth perception is really dangerous. So he has students help him. But his stuff also makes a lot of money, and he has extra help. Yet I think it's art.

I've seen Koons in the Museum of Contemporary art. I think "Michael Jackson and Bubbles" is fugly. But I liked "Rabbit."
And I saw an installation of Chihuly at the Garfield Park Conservatory - I really liked his stuff.
I think I'm answering the question with more questions!
***Edit:
Oh, and I think good art is for everyone, not just rich people who can afford it. I think good quality museums, galleries, performances, dance performances, etc. should be available to everyone. I used to have to beg some of my old bf's to come see me in dance recitals and community theatre productions, b/c they were afraid of sitting in the audience and feeling stupid compared to everyone else. I'm sorry, but you don't need a PhD in Art History to see me tap dance, jeezt people.
I think that everyone is capable of participating in art somehow, whether they are an artist or an observer. I think that anything that's "exclusive" (whether it's b/c you're super-rich or a hipster) is really bad and unhealthy for society.

Art is a form of communication. Through art you communicate your feeling, emotions, thoughts, and opinions for everyone else to see.
Good art. Geeze, I think good art makes you feel what the artest felt when he/she did it. I accualy cried when out teacher showed out art class one of her pictures. It was just so sad and painful and I felt what she did.
I don't know what bad art is. If its truly art then its not bad. But I do prefer some forms of art to others.

Art is art. It's putting meaning into an object, picture or anything else, really. I mean, if it doesn't have meaning, it's kitsch. Not to say that abstract art isn't art, it's art because the meaning is about the work itself.
Of the non-contemporary artists, I loooove Rembrandt, Mondrian, Manet, Basquait, Warhol, Rauschenberg, cave paintings, Raphael, Kandinsky, Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman... In fact, I loved pretty much everything that I saw when I studied art for school.
Contemporary art confuses me, so I don't like it as much. But I love the nifty things, Space Invader is my hero at the moment (Rubik's cube pixels == love).
Apart from that, I hate kitsch.

Art......art is when you create something to express yourself. It's when you take your thoughts, feelings, and insanity and spill it out for the world to see, but then create something wonderful.

OMG! I totally agree! I've worked in allsorts of Theatre. My ex boyfriend was completely happy coming to see an Opera I worked on but didn't want to come and see Grease! WHAT A CULTURE SNOB!
Art (and I also mean theatre and literature and craft) should be accessible for everyone.
I personally prefer craft to fine art. Maybe I'm closed minded but I'm not a fan of conceptual art, even though I like to play the devils advocate in debates about it, if it's not pleasant to look at or hasn't got a relevant back story then I dismiss it as a stunt. One day real art will come back, I think people are sick of being exploited by artists and people like the Saatchis.
Er what was the question? lol
I hope I've summed up my answers in that paragraph.

I think Art is anything that provokes an emotion! Wether it be disdain, appreciation, confusion, digust, admiration etc, they are all emotions and even if I don't like a persons style of art I always give it the benefit of being called Art, because it will evoke a different emotion for someone else!
probably didn't make a lot of sense, but im new here and totally lost! lol

Art is how you express yourself.
There is no good or bad art. Just art that you may prefer or dislike.
I dislike paintings. I feel that they do not accurately display the painters feelings, but only leave the observer confused. I personally like plays. They can express so much with so little.

Art is and IDEA.
Any form of expression either positive or negative. Art is an emotion, a memory,a dream, how you see the world or how the world see's you. I think that mostly anyone can create art.
*the thing about art today is that we have had so much history and ideas already trown at us that it is harder to make something original. we recycle the things we have seen and learned and modify them to our own. i don't know if anyone understands what i'm trying to say? i hope you get this. i'm trying to say that with the new technology that we have in today's society (such as tv) and our youth being exposed to it they have lost their form of imagination.
haha..grr..its hard to explain
but to me...ART IS a LANGUAGE,CULTURE,and IDENTITY
