View Full Version : Two Hoodie Jackets
Is it still considered DIY if I use a pattern?
Here are two jackets I have been spending most of the last three days working on. The mother of one of my friends hired me to make a hooded jacket out of a quilt top she had made (the pink thing) so I used the opportunity to make myself a new jacket. I chose a dark green and light green dragonfly fabric for mine that I LOVE. I like my jackets longer so I lengthened the pattern pieces for mine. I love the lines of piping. I even printed out my own label and put it inside my jacket! Both jackets have a light layer of batting between the layers. Nice and cozy.

That looks really nice and comfy. The piping makes it look rather professional too. I hope mine come out as well. :)

I absolutely love the dragonfly one! It's so exactly what I would do-down to the legnthening of the waist. Beautiful.

Hey great work on the two jackets! Love the dragonfly one. How did you print out your own label?? I'd love to do that myself. What kind of fabric is the dragonfly jacket made of?

Those indeed look amazing! And, Kate...you're CUTE! Love the hair. The dragonfly pattern is so pretty, but not overly girly-girl. Flove.

I'm very impressed! Great job!
Thanks guys! I love my jacket and I'm so bummed the weather is so nice!
Joybells - I used 100% cotton for the fabrics. To make the label I ironed freezer paper onto the back of my fabric and cut out a 4x6 square. (The freezer paper temporarily turns the fabric into paper for the printer - gotta love freezer paper) then you print it as normal. Heat set the ink for a minute with a hot iron, rinse, iron again and there you go! Adds an incredibly professional touch.
Ryan - I made the outer jacket and then the inner jacket and then sewed them right sides together leaving a hole for turning. After turning I top-stitched all along the outer edges so it would stay put.
Ladyjanewriter - thanks. :p I do triathlons and run around after two little kids and all that hair was just getting in the way so I chopped it all off, but I love it this way. I like how the color of the dragonfly fabric is kind of camouflage looking, but made out of a pretty pattern, so they kind of balance out.
You guys are so nice!

how did you get a layer of batting in between them?
i undertstand the turning
but when/where does tha batting come into play?
I sewed the batting onto the outer fabric pieces first, before sewing the fabric pieces together to make the jacket. I used a 1/4" seam allowance when attaching the batting and a 1/2" seam allowance when assembling the jacket.

absolutely it is still considered d.i.y... i mean, you're still doing it yourself, as opposed to buying it.
and those are absolutely adorable, and a nice alternative to having to buy something similar for like $60+ in a store.
Thanks! It was pretty cold today so I actually got to wear my green one and I LOVE it. So soft and warm but not bulky. And you're right, it's a great alternative to buying something similar - nice to have a jacket out of a print that I love - instead of just black or something plain.
