View Full Version : On Going Project-Youth For Youth Fashion Show

pinoyblaze
08-01-2007, 01:05 PM
So my group CATT has been invited once again to participate in the Youth for Youth Fashion show with Bill Wilson Center (http://www.billwilsoncenter.org/) and so we'll be going to the planning meeting starting next week.

As seen before in a previous thread (http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?t=120)
the focus is on recycled material, mostly donated and bought thrift. Then they are used to make outfits with a message. The messages are focus of health and social problems in out community such as domestic violence, homelessness, mental health etc.

So the reason I've actually made this thread is because I'm asking for help from you all.

I want to ask if you guys would like to help give advice on designs, the process and ideas :D I'll be posting sketches of outfits soon. If you have any ideas for this project please feel free to get in contact with me at francisco_sj@yahoo.com. you can also reply to this topic cuz I'll be checking it out frequently.

PS this year I want to refine things more (now that I've gotten better at sewing and such) one objective is to make a condom dress like this one http://nogoodforme.filmstills.org/Bertini4Dresses.jpg

to address sexual health issues. It'll be my greatest work yet!!! haha neway :D that's all

Something about a girl wearing a dress made of condoms strikes me as rather suggestive, especially the one on the left with them all unraveled. But yeah, you have a wide array of options, different colors, textures,... flavors. Maybe if you made a dress with all sealed packages, it could be an "evolving piece."

Sorry.

I think it's a great idea and I think you should try expanding it into men's fashion as well. Why not a dress and a suit made of condoms? That way it covers all bases.

At my prom a girl was wearing a dress, similar to your pictures, made entirely out of condoms. She was my friend and had previously told me that she hadn't wanted a full length dress but at the end of the night it was above her knees. The condoms were not opened and in individual packets. :) I don't think that helped any, but I love the idea.

this is so weird because my school theater dept( which i am in ) thank you very much

we did a show where all of the costumes
and the set were made of trash
the show was a comedy of errors
i was dr pinch.
i had a cape made of a trampoline
and a cumberbun made of a hose
and a newspaper tie

heres the costume design sheet
this was my costum eonly
http://i16.tinypic.com/4tzrapt.jpg

it turned out pretty much like that
ill post a pic of my cape if you want
we did alot of apparel made of duct tape, grocery bags, newspaper, basically any trash we could find.
if you want pics of the other costumes and the set let me know
ill try to

also check this link
me and my friedn who knows how to crochet
is gonna make these for me

That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I love the statement the dresses make. Like MamaSasss said, you should expand into men's fashion, maybe even using diaphrams instead of condoms.

Let me go down the list of topics we did covered last time:

-Tobacco
-Drunk Driving
-Homelessness
-Recycling (duh)
-Environment (Dirty Waterways in 3rd world countries)
-Voting
-Male health
-Mental Health (Suicide and what not)
-HIV/STD Testing
-LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bi Transgender) Support
-Racism and Prejudiced
-Health Hearts & Relationships
-Body Image & Self esteem
-Nutrition

...among other things, the topics will be virtually the same (though I'm open to include others too). I personally want to add sexual health (the condom dress, or even suit (thanks for the suggestion MamaSass!!!), expand on mental health/addiction as well as educational rights. We'll be adding pieces rather than making a whole new line.

One requirement again is to keep it recycled, thrifty or donated. :D

That's a good idea Ryan. I want to explore more nontraditional materials as well for this show. I'm planning to make a remake of the plastic bag dress using fused grocery bags. I'm still trying to think of more sophisticated designs at the same time. I remember going to the San Francisco Discarded to Divine show and being blown away. It was awesome. Recycled and beautiful. Sigh, I'm feel dreamy now haha nap time! :D

ryanmoore, are you in high school right now? B/C you SO should try for a school like FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) if you haven't thought of it yet.

Back to topic. OK, I think I've seen these dresses in an issue of BUST. I know she didn't sew them. She used various adhesives and techniques. I know they interviewed her...hm...I don't know if she mentioned specific adhesives. It was a LOT of condoms, tho.

Yup I've tried to sew condoms before but they rip to easily. Ya think you could find a link for that interview? Or maybe send it to me via e-mail?

Oh, I'm not worried. I have a stack load of expired condoms from work (I'm a health outreach worker at the clubs) I could always get more. The issue really is to wash them all O_o it's so hard...

If I was doing something like this I would pick nutrition and how todays children aren't getting enough exersize and too much candy, and probibly make some kind of outfit out of candy wrappers or the candy itself.

Shoot, I can't find it. Other condom dresses from China.

this is when theater knowledge comes in handy

we made some prosthetic face pieces out of latex
and we attached them to the actors face with

spirit gum

so i know it bonds to latex
but i dont know how well
it will work with that kind
you can find it at any costume shop
it is used widely in stage makeup and what not
i dont know how well it will bond to fabric though???
anyways
spirit gum is a biznitch to get off your face
for the show i posted a pic of
i had a mop spirit gummed to my face for a beard
it was heinous to take off

ow memories of that show hurt.....

anyways

ill try and come up with some designs

ill prob work with

mental health
recycling
homelessness

and others like that

Yeah, I used spirit gum before (I'm a drama head too :D) It's interesting when used properly but it's more of the cost of the product that concerns me. Baby wipes are useful if you wanna get costume makeup off, so I see no problem with it. haha yes, it hurts so much, especially when you forget to shave -_-

Thanks Ryan! You're really going beyond the call of duty!!! You rock my socks man!

I was gonna PM you, ryanmoore, but figured anyone else who wanted to go to fashion design school when they're older might wanna know, too. :) I figure I should mention this, b/c sometimes Guidance Counsellors just really don't know about the arts at all. I hate that. I know you're supposed to respect your elders, but sometimes they give crummy advice when it comes to art schools.

FIT = Fashion Institute of Technology. It's in NYC.

OK, I didn't read the whole thing, but the stuff for new admissions (students who apply and want to be there) is here. They have a Menswear program, too:

http://www.fitnyc.edu/aspx/Content.aspx?menu=Future

OMG! They have online courses! I didn't know that! I donno how old you have to be or anything?:

http://www.fitnyc.edu/aspx/Content.aspx?menu=Future:SchoolsAndPrograms:Online Programs

Here's the link to their galleries, including student shows:

http://www.fitnyc.edu/aspx/Content.aspx?menu=FutureGlobal:Gallery

I'll also put up the link for Parsons School of Design - that's the one that they show on Project Runway - That's where Tim Gunn teaches. Whenever the designers are working on their designs, they're in a work-room at Parson's.

http://www.parsons.edu/departments/department.aspx?dID=73&sdID=96&pType=1

Tricia Royal, the gal who started wardrobe_remix, graduated from Parsons. She might be worth asking? I donno her personally, or how busy she is, but I think she'd understand if you explained you're a sophomore and you just heard about this and think it's cool.

Hope this helps! Knowledge is Power!

Random thought...

If one of the topics is homelessness, how about making an outfit made of cardboard? Maybe hats and shoes made out of plastic bags?

ladyjanewriter
08-02-2007, 04:21 PM
or the Ugly Quilt! It's not fashion, but it's where DIY meets helping people/outreach.

***Edit:

I keep wondering if someone could make a rain poncho out of the plastic bag "fabric." I'm tempted to do it, but it gets so windy around here on bad days I'm afraid it'd rip apart.

omg
i wanna go there
and its in nyc
which is totally where i wanna live
ahhhh
im like freaking out
thats so cool
most of their stuff is very upscale
and my deisgns
are usually made to make a statement
or to be different
but who knows maybe they are looking for some of that???

thanks for the info!

ryanmoore
08-02-2007, 04:28 PM
omg i thought of another one

its a skirt made of safety pins
my friend and i were going to make it for the show i keep talking about
but we didnt have enought time

but we did figure out how to make it

you make a paper skirt
one that fits
then poke the safety pins into the skirt
then interlock the pins to each other
with another pin or thread w/e
then once you finish all the pins
you have a paper skirt with safety pins all over it
then take a lighter and light the paper
burning it off of the safety pins
so then you have safety pins in the shape of the paper ??

it sounds like it will work
but im not sure

and someone could use the idea for other stuf

but im not sure what issue it would address

but i think mental health
because they are falling apart inside so much
they have to wear safety pins
to keep themselves from falling apart??

YW! :) I've gotta admit, when I saw that drawing, I was like, "Damn, that looks like a 'real' fashion design sketch...holy SHIT how old's this kid???"

so i just keep posting
but i have some ideas

i thought of and idea
for the social issues

you take a piece of clothing from
each different clique

polo shirt
black skirt
punk rock shirt
sporty /jock socks
cleats
heels?

etc

then sew them together
we did this in my
topics in technical theater class
my friend sewed a striped polo together
with a green day shirt
down the middle
then they sewed
a black skirt
with jean shorts ( one leg of each)
and then shoes from whatever
but they were all connected
by a cell phone
so i would say patch them together
with patches of a phone
or a spray paint stencil outline

if you catch what i mean

if you like this idea
or if you think its stupid please tell me

thx

OMG there are a lot of posted already! Kudos Ryan, you are now officially my best friend! :D I'll scan some of the pre production sketches of last year's fashion show for you guys. I think they basically stayed virtually the same in concept. Mind you, I still need to find the sketches...I haven't fonund them for a while :P

BTW there is no really problem tying a seemingly abstract design to a message because it can be as vague or as direct as actual text on the clothing. It's more of the meaning of the line.

I'm sure to give you major props with my youth group and at the event guys and I'll try to record the event this year so I can post it up...then again it's still so far aways from now :P

(I didn't even try for Literary Magazine, because I knew they all hung out in the Lit Mag room dropping acid. I should NOT take LSD, I'm too imaginative as it is already.)

Amazing ideas, Pinoyblaze and ryanmoore!

I wonder how the newspapers got dyed? Tempera? I bet sharpies would be really interesting.

haha well I'm not in high school but okay :P I'll take the compliment haha <3 Yeah, I know the artsy druggie types, it's not too bad, they are useful so long as you provide food (seriously though, don't hate the user hate the drug)

Supposedly the paint he used was tempura or just plain acrylic. Amazing isn't it? I guess it made it a bit more rubbery so that it didn't rip.

This reminds me of my groups "Click it or Ticket" campaigns on seat belt safety at schools. We wore seatbelts across our chests and counted how many people wore seat belts was they were getting dropped of at school. Mind you that means they took it off only when the car was at a complete stop.

Random observation, it's more likely for Asian males not to wear seatbelts....it's strange, I think it's a culture thing. Filipinos don't use seatbelts either at native islands, so maybe it's because it's such a norm.... seriously buckle up my friends. It's there to use not just to stare at ;P

amen to that

my life was saved by a seatbelt so i ALWAYS wear one
i was in the passenger seat of a honda crv
and this guy hit us almost head on
and we were both going like 30
omg it was so scary
and then the guy that hit us ( it was all his fault)

hahahaha i laugh at him
and sincei was ""hurt"" ( not)
i got $600 because that guy was a retard
and thats why i have a new computer!!
woo laptops

anyways-------------

the outfit

it was the friday of a show we were doing at my school
and always after the show on friday we go to ihop...
ok so..... but that night everyone felt really weird
like something was going to happen.....'it was so creppy

then that night while all of us were at ihop

Ali and Tessa were killed by a drunk driver
( ali was a girl who was in our theater department that like everyone knew)

they were stopped at a red light
and the drunk driver ( who was an illegeal immigrant)
came up behind them and hit them doing 80!
and both of the girls died instantly
but the stupid drunk driver lived

and now the polive arent prolly going to punish him as hard because he is an illegal immigrnat !!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like how retarded is that

but anyways now im taking a stand on drunk driving
sorry to be all emo on you guys
but the police sometimes are just plain stupid!

they were stopped at a red light
and the drunk driver ( who was an illegal immigrant)
came up behind them and hit them doing 80!
and both of the girls died instantly
but the stupid drunk driver lived

and now the police aren't prolly going to punish him as hard because he is an illegal immigrant !!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like how retarded is that

hm...first off I do want to express my sympathy for the lost lives of you and your friends, no one ever deserves to have such taken aways from them and unfortunately due to circumstances like drunk driving, they are taken away sooner than expected.

:confused:But I noticed a focus on the offender as a illegal alien in the articles that you posted and in a way I see it as generalizing that all illegal immigrants as drunkards who get away from screwing with the legal system. I personally could rant about this particular topic but it would take away from the meaning of this thread.

I am not saying that the immigrant should be let off the hook just because of his status (On the contrary, also note that here in California DUI accidents are considered intentional murder, we have some of the harshest laws in the US) but by focusing on the aspect of his illegal status alone is too much of a open door for prejudice to step in. Drunk driving is just that, drunk driving, it's illegal.

So thank you Ryan for openly sharing such a story with us, and I can say from the bottom of my heart of how appreciative I am for help with this project. I will take this to heart and I hope you still pump out such awesome designs for this project :P

(Ryan--really sorry to hear about that accident. But the outfit you designed embodies the issue of drunk driving very well.)

Ahem. On the topic of the show, what you're doing is really great. The designs from last year were so amazing, especially the suicide one. I live in CA, too, so it burns me that the show is about five hours away!! So unfortunately, I can't make it. :/

But, I tried to design something you might be able to get some inspiration from, though I seem to have lost all my creativity a long time ago. If this idea is decent enough, I'd be more than happy to come up with clothes addressing other issues.

Here it is, a girl's ensemble touching on tobacco. The glove, I think, may be too out-there to actually make good use of, but the basic idea for it was that cigarettes are something that weighs the user down emotionally and physically, but they find it hard to let go.

The necklace is supposed to represent how the tobacco "chokes the user to death" in a way. The grey, semi-transparent ruffles on it and the pleated skirt are the "smoke".

Lastly, the black stripes across the chest are representative of blackened lungs, which ruin a once smoke-free life (bright pink).

Heh. I overthought this. It's not that great, but I hope it helps in some way!

I love this!!! Especially the choker part.

so question on the cig attached to the glove? Is there another way to express this idea? Maybe making the sleeves in the same pattern and pallet of a typical cig?

Of course, of course. You don't have to exactly follow any part of my design--it's just there for inspiration. :) I think replacing the glove with sleeves or arm warmers would totally work just as well!!

Let me list off the answers:

-You design rocks, I'll just have tough time looking for buckles. I already have one of the models eyes you design too. She loves it.

-CATT actually is a plug in line, because it's actually a mobile fashion show we show at different events. It was actually conceived first as a fashion drag show but it ended up more health orientated. It'll just be a big one day event and we have two segments to walk so that we have time in between to change. It's crazy backstage too, I remember one of the model running in the dress we made for her and spraying and combing her hair at the same time. It was hilarious!!!

This year we'll list the designers and have more of a MC talking about the designs because it was lacking last time. Don't worry you get full credit for the concept :P Last year we had six designers and 18+ outfits. It was awesome (I did 14 out of the 18 BTW....my fingers were bleeding O_o haha)

You focus can be any issues that concern you. It's about the designers meaning after all, more likely something relating to health.

im also thinking of doing stuff that against stereotyping
because it sucks
and society needs a scapegoat
so they pick on people who dont
fit society's norm

this is what i think

in the 1800's
blacks were slaves

during ww2
jews were forced through genocide

now
politicians are against gays

what is wrong with society???
im going to focus on elements on
stuff like that
and im going to do stereotyping
because im soooo not your average 15 year old male
btw im not gay
but im a theater kid, i hate football, i love shopping, i love clothes, i HAVE to match, i have mostly friends that are girls, most guys dont like me , and on and on and on etc.

so ive been through stuff
ALOT of stuff
so im going to design stuff around what society needs
and why people suck
and why stereotyping sucks!!!!!!!!!1

anyways im gonna go work on those now
I HAVE IDEAS * screams in excitement*!!!!

ooo this is so grungy, i love it, I'm gonna make some interpretation drawings of all your designs if you don't mind. I want to see them on a 3D-ish form so that I can visualize it more.

BTW It's okay if your not gay, you don't have to feel bad that your not (haha I'm just teasing you silly)

so here are my interpretations of both Ryan's and Ari's designs. I"ll be coloring them later this week :D hope you guys like them. I've made very few modifications to you original designs so they are relevantly the same. The most drastic is Ari's sleeves. They were made to look morel like giant cigs. Any suggestions or question?

omg * tears up*

it looks SOOOOOO much better when you draw it
my drawings kinda suckk but you got the idea

where did you learn to draw like that?
i wanna draw like that!!!

anyways your drawing and modifications are amazing!!!
i love what you did to them
but on the drunk driving one
i noticed your model has wide hips
and i think you got that from my drawing
the only reason that happened is because i cant draw
so she can have hips or not
it dont matter

what kind of marker/pencil/pen do you draw with??
i love them!!!!!!!

* tears up again*
amazing you are!!
( retarded grammar much????)

1)take a intensive animation magnet program for four years in addition to painting/drawing classes. Or look up some online drawing lessons :P Then practice till your fingers bleed.

2) I love hips, real women have curves

3) I used regular pencil and then the chunky monkey Crayola markers everyone uses in the 3rd grade. Yes, I don't need fancy markers, I love Crayola!!! <3

4) Haha, it's okay you don't need to defend yourself, it's not that big of a deal anyway. Chill axe mr straight boy :P I was just teasing. And another note: Thank you gay people are AWESOME XD

So one question on the color pallet, I need help deciding what to pick. I'll experiment with some color this week. Hopeful I'll get it done by this weekend.

for the drunk driving issue
i think it should be mostly
reds and blacks and greys

im open to ideas though!!

I got inspired from your GSA hoodie discussion and drew this. It's a little like your PFLAG thing from last year, but I swear I looked at that AFTER I finished. Sorry about the crappy computer drawing, I don't have a tablet. I hope it's useful : )

I had another idea for your project today, pinoyblaze.

In Michigan (and various other states) pop/beer cans/bottles have a .10 deposit on them, so you can return them once they are empty and get that .10 back. Well, in Detroit I know lots of homeless people take advantage of the deposit so they go rummaging for empty cans and bottles so they can make some money. I've always thought it was crazy that other states don't do this as well. So, why not make an outfit made of cans and bottles? You can make bottle cap earrings and other jewelry. Maybe make shoes out of the boxes the cans come in. Just a thought.

And that's the latest from this soapbox.

you could glue three cans together
in a line so they are all standing next to each other
glue some cheap dollar store flip flops on top
and ta-da soda can platforms

but they might crunch
grr

aha
fill em with glue!

for the environment category, you should make dresses that look like the beach. it's clean blue from the bottom and then starts getting dirty and stuff above the waist. you can spray paint images of trash and stuff. ooooo,or you can do a dress that or shorts that is black and brown with the trash images up to the waist and you can call it "waste-deep"
ooo, that works for any of the three suggestions i said.

You can sew cans together like this. A hippy classic!
The how-to is here
Brought to you by StitchyMcYarnpants.com (http://www.stitchymcyarnpants.com/tincan/beercan.html)

It's for a hat, but could make a dress or pants, a cape or coat....then it would show the alcohol issue, or environment issues...could work it into the drunk driving thing too...

My advice: Find a secondhand corset and A LOT of something else (toys, plastic bags, newspaper, umbrellas, menīs suits ect. CHOOSE ONLY ONE MATERIAL) and take them a part. The corset is a fantastic base to pin/sew/glue your materials on. Anything looks good on a dress if the whole dress is made from it. Avoid using too much different mareials, because the outcome might be a bit too much hobo. ;)

Aim for a gown.like form. :) Good luck with your project!
