I found the idea and pattern youtube.com under make magizine

This Satchel is all recycled. I made the black "plastic" material out of trashbags that i melted together with an iron. ( look under youtube for more details)

The strap:i striped from a trashed car. Its a seat belt

Everything on the front was had stiched on for a punk look.

The Front strap: I salvaged from an old backpack

The smily face was from a plastic type of bag. like a walmart bag

The "Everything about the music"
i got from a huge hottopic bag

and the "xxx" was hand stiched

Here are the pix.:D

Awesome!!!

How many layers of plastic bags dija use? I've tried grocery bags, but pooped out at 6 layers. (I know the Etsy Labs tute said 8 bags). Wait, those are trash bags? Extra awesome.

Just an everyday iron, jamaicamahn15 - it's really neat. It works really quickly!

duct tape dude!

I love Make Magazine's tutorial podcasts. I also think Bre Pettis is a total fox ;) I subscribe to them as well as TB and Indymogul. They show you how to make DIY movie special effects. It's pretty neat. This is on my to-do list as far as projects go, but I've got a zillion bags stashed up in my apartment, so I should get to it :)

i probably sound pretty stoopid but how'd u get it to retain it's shape and just so you kno im new at this

ryanmoore
07-30-2007, 11:26 PM
when i tried it
it worked ok

it retains its shape because the plastic melts together
and forms a thickness similar to vinyl
kinda
when you sew it together it holds its self up
the plastic is thick enough

Make mag says that the ironed plastic bags work better as 8ply so just fold it in half and then in half again. I also found that you can place a label under 1 layer before you iron it and it will come through...just watch that the label is made with the ink set in because if it is on the surface it will leak!
have fun!:D

thanks everyone for the feedback

ladyjane: the trashbags i used were kindof thick so i jsut left it at the fold they were in in the box
and it came out great

but i used 8 fold with thinner bags

ryanmoore: My buddies brother destroyed his car and i thought since it was totaled i could jack a seat belt

so i took it with out him knowing
**sticky fingers**
but i would guess it wouldnt be much

gilligilligumdrops: i used something like that
for the smily face i jsut got a walmart bag and made it 8 fold
then i cut out the smily face out of another bag and just put it under one of the folds so i could still see it but the ink wouldnt stick to the wax paper

SO a buddy of mine made a purse for his girlfriend out of this material
he just made a large rectangle and just sewed up the sides and fliped it inside out
and me melted some other material and cut out shapes and letters and it came out amazing

ill get a pix of it
for you guys

Awesome. I've been waiting for my iron (which my brother stuck in storage) so I could try it. I watch make magazine too. It's cool to see someone actually make one. It looks like it works pretty well.

I just tried it with clear produce bags and it turns out that the albertson's doughnut bags work best for clear plastic. If you use newsprint (not newspaper) instead of wax paper, it runs the risk of maybe getting stuck to the newsprint, but it won't get wax residue on it if you get it right. And although it's a bit bubley it'll still work if you're trying to make like an ID pocket or a clear wallet or something. I think the best option for that, though are those bags they sell bedding with. You know like the clear plastic cubes with the zippers on them.

so punk haha, I love the use of a seat belt. A strong military belt with a fancy buckle works well too.

Oh, I tried ironing my plastic bags using aluminum foil. Worked fine. It also made it a bit "shiny" on the melty bits, b/c I used it shiny side down. It seems to retain the heat longer.

Er, not that I did ANYTHING with it.

And I donno if the aluminum would cause early alzheimer's or whatnot.

Ok that seatbelt is like the best idea ever!

danceERINdance
07-31-2007, 10:36 PM
how hard is it to sew the plastic? especially since it was heated.. which usually makes the texture a lot thicker...

xDirectorx
07-31-2007, 10:52 PM
danceERINdance: It is was easy
i used a thick needle to go through it but it does make it
and i didnt break the needle
it will make it

I had some success with the fused-plastic thing, using one of those blue plastic AT&T bags they stick phone books in and leave on your doorstep. Given that the plastic was pretty thick to start, I only folded it 4-ply. Worked swell! I made it into a wallet and used orange thread for a nice contrast.

OHMYGOD!!!! i have 2 of those seat-belt belts that i never ever wear and using them as a strap for a DIY messenger bag is such an amazing idea. why did i never think of that?!

where did you get the measurements
for your bag
??????????????//
i looked on the make magazine site
but it didnt have a length for across the bag
so what are the measurements of yours????
does it fit stuff in it for school?
like binders, and textbooks???

that's really cool. monster bag! hehe

xDirectorx
08-11-2007, 01:17 AM
Ryanmoore: I didnt see the across measurments
so i guessed since the length is 10' and there are two 3' segments to make up the bottom i assumed 16' and it works fine

im using it for school
and all my books fit perfectly
turning them sideways it will fit perfectly!!

WOAH that is mad good. I'm gonna make one soon... I just need the time (damn summer school ruining my lovely diy-summer. grr.) Would it look wonky if I used regular bags and spray-painted them? I think maybe the paint would chip after time...

I love the smiley face, and the words. I would so use this as my bookbag.

Ok seriously, I think I just died.
I LOVE happy faces. I like, collect them. I have a pair of happy face jeans that I got from Goodwill for like 8 dollars. Their awesome, but I can't wear them anymore because their hippie jeans that go up way above my belly button, yet they're a size 12 for kids. They suffocate me ><

Ok, off topic. Anyway, I love that bag. The words look a lot better hand sewed then they would have been if it was by machine. I love the seat belt strap too. Looks really cool.
You did a great job on it. =]
