Hi I'm new here. I'm Jordan.
My brother wanted to make a purse for his daughter out of an old Simpsons bed sheet, but had no idea how to do it, so I offered my help. I sewed a skirt closed to make a purse for my girlfriend a while back that I never finished, but really this was my first REAL project and I was a bit overwhelmed. I know most of the stuff on the inside is wrong and I should have made it so there isn't so much loose fabric in there, but it was a learning experience and now I know better. Most importantly, though, my neice loves it and had an awesome birthday.
Next up, a wallet out of goodwill purchases and a messenger bag made of old comic shop plastic bags for me to carry my comics pages in at the next comic con.
You can find more pictures of it on my flickr, here: http://www.flickr.com/gp/43188406@N00/h8L6wb (http://www.flickr.com/gp/43188406@N00/h8L6wb)

Wow!
**Whups, hit enter too soon. Hee.
As I was saying...That's a helluva first attempt. Great job! I love how you really took the fabric pattern into account. I really love how Marge and the "Yummy and nutritious!" bit is on the front flap. You have a natural gift of how to best use the pattern in the fabric visually, which I think is fantastic. Some ppl are great at sewing, but don't match up fabric very well, so something can be constructed well, but still look kinda awful.
Again, great job!

Well, it was a bed sheet that my brother used to have, then it got handed down to me and then it sat in our closet for about five years. The fabric on the inside I actually got from *cringe* Walmart because the craft store near my house didn't have fabric. Sorry, if you were asking so I could tell you where you could get it. You could maybe try ebay or craigs list, but I don't know for sure.

Oh...I think she meant the sewing pattern itself? :) Not just the fabric. Although the fabric is cool, also. Did you use a pattern you bought? Or did you make up your own messenger bag pattern?
(anyway, that's how I read it...)

Thanks. Yeah, I actually made my patterns out of tracing paper so I could lay it on the sheet and see what would be on the bag. My brother actually had quite a bit of input on it aswell. It was his idea to put marge on the front flap and he had told me he wanted homer getting scared and bart looking at his toothbrush to be somewhere on it.

Oh, well I actually just figured out the pattern myself. I can go ahead and post it in this thread, but I've never actually used a real pattern so it'll probably seem weird and require a bit of explaining. And I'll have to actually draft it since I just made it out of tracing paper that got all torn up.

That's okay. You don't have to go through the trouble, haha.
But thanks! I want to make a book bag, and I like the way your bag turned out, and I was thinking of the same style.

I agree, you have a knack for choosing the best parts of the pattern to work with! Cool bag!! :)
(Haha, we do that all the time...sneaking in movie candy, that is. In fact I grew up thinking that's what you do. Another thing my dad does is gently shake the popcorn bag when the girl has her back turned, so the popcorn settles about an inch and a half; then he goes (politely) "Excuse me, do you suppose you could fill that up, please?" Naughteeeee... )

I am beyond guilty of that, I spent 20 dollars on candy the last time i went to the movies. But I almost never see movies in theaters so I don't consider it a big deal. And the purse is beyond awesome. I love purses.
