After all DIY means "do it yourself" right? That's what it's all about. I think it should just be an understanding that while taking someone's ideas or techniques and applying them yourself is cool, taking someone's outright design isn't. If somebody ganked any of foundmyfrisbee's bleach tee designs after he put them up for show, I'm sure he'd be pretty pissed off. So would AndrewMundy if someone lifted his checkerboarded coat of arms spray paint tee design.
There should just be limits as to what's copyable. Peace.

It depends on the intent of the original artist, to be honest.

Not to bash what you are saying or nothin but for the coat of arms thing, I wouldnt mind. Coats of arms have been around for centuries, so im just portraying my version of it.
Now if you downright ripped it off, sure id be upset. Like if I created a frogleapardzebracorn stencil, I am pretty gosh darned sure that no one else has thought about it before and if I see it on like Urban Outfitters I would be pretty pissed. By the way, I am not sure if you know this, but Urban Outfitters is well known as the company that ripps off indie artists. Google it.
anyways, great points you have there, and its really cool that I ended up in your message =D
I agree that if someone was to rip off an idea, and claim it as their own, that would be wrong. However, I think that if someone was inspired by what someone else did, and adapted that into their design, that would be fine.
For example, I really liked miaux cat's Tank top handbag (http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?t=100&highlight=tank) idea, and was going to expand upon it. When I finish the project, I will mention that the idea was taken from miaux.
Most things in this world, be it music, arts, crafts, businesses, etc., are based on the borrowing and revising of others ideas. As long as you put your own unique spin on it, and give credit to the person that inspired you, it should be fine.

I have to admit that when I see something in a store that I like but know I can make it myself, I won't buy it. Part of the joy of DIY is adding yer own style to it anyway. Inspiration comes from everywhere.
So, basically I think it boils down to common sense. Give credit where credit is due and dwell in inspiration. Don't claim someone else's idea as yer own. Unless, of course, you want to be a douche bag.
Lesson for the day:
Don't be a douche.
Douche douche douche.
I just like saying douche. :o

Yeah! If you rip others, you are a salt & vinegar douche.

Hi, GreenMeanie, may I ask what led you to thinking about this stuff/posting about this stuff? Just wondering.
Going past the whole "don't be a dootch" thing, here...:)
One thing that was always big in the tap dance "hoofer" community, was the idea that you don't outright "steal" a step. That's being a thief, basically.
If you get a step from someone else, you make sure everyone knows that that's so-and-so's step. Or, if you change it up, you "steal the step and change it up." I think DIY is similar.
You steal a step, and make it your own. Or, you give credit where credit's due, if you want to use the step as-is.
