I just learnt a few months ago and now I can't stop. I had to search a lot within youtube and forums, but at the end it worked out fine for me. It would've been great to have had someone to teach me though...
If you have the time and money I recommend to get into one of this sewing courses to learn the basics or ask some aunt or friend that knows.
If you are more of a self learner, as myself, you can go to youtube and search for videos. There is also a very good book that you may find useful, "Teach yourself visually sewing". you can download it HERE (http://rapidshare.com/files/178863168/Teach_Yourself_Visually_Sewing_pdf_0471749915.rar) .
(You may need a password in order to open it, in that case the pass is: englishtips.org)
Good luck!

I started sewing just last summer with absolutely no experience, and over time, I got the hang of it. Just keep practicing. You really can self-teach yourself- I did!
Start with the basics. Use resources on the internet, sewing books, ThreadBanger Forums is a really great place for information, to learn the different parts of a sewing machine. Play with different fabrics, stretchy, stiffy, etc. Keep watching ThreadBanger episodes and observe what Rob and Corinne do as they sew. Look out for the sequence of steps: making the pattern, tracing the pattern, adding seam allowance, etc.
Start simple with wallets or circle skirts and make your way up to more complicated things as you start getting used to it. It takes some time but that time practicing is well worth it! Good luck! Send another post if you have any questions. I'd love to help out with the best of what I know!

I would start very simple so you do not get frustrated. Make sure your sewing machine you use is working properly.. tension and such.. if not that can be very frustrating. i recently learned to sew with how to fashion design with bob martin it very easy lesson. it contains sewing exercises to practice, seam allowances, notches, working with a actual patten, and is step by step and then a project to finish.. for a beginner it made me feel like i really learned something being able to finish a simple project and learn the basics.. good luck..love to hear how you learn..

Still have your sewing machine manual?
Read through it a couple times until you can pick out all the parts of your machine. It will make learning at places like Youtube easier, since you'll know what is where and what the name is. Plus, you can learn to do things like thread it, change the feet and clean it, that's how I learned the more obscure things about my machine.
