This is my first attempt at upcycling. I used the handbag tutorial that was on Threadheads a few weeks ago. I used two lambswool sweaters that I bought at Goodwill. Since the material was too thick to sew together at the top of the strap, I took a piece of the liner and tied a cute knot at the top of the strap and stitched it into place. For embellishment, I made a flower and attached it using a nice button I had lying around. It isn't grey and orange, it is actually green and orange. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y149/Kpup/DSCF3890.jpg

Ok, here we go.....I've been making shirts for the past few weeks. A friend of mine and I are collaborating and are thinking of starting our own little business.

This is my friend Kristine modeling a shirt I made for kids I went to school with. She drew the owl.

I was going to add some beads to the bottom of the strings to serve as fashionable weights, but it seems I don't have any beads!! Ugh. So, it's technically unfinished for the moment.

And I forgot about his belt I made my roomie's sister almost a year ago. I really should give it to her already:

While back I posted the t shirt remake of a black t shirt into a jumper skirt on the Threadbanger forum thread Megan Nicolay Generation T projects (http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?t=58) and on my blog, September Son (http://www.septemberson.blogspot.com) . Well, after many requests I finally put up a tutorial on how to make this out of an extra large t shirt:

**Jumper Skirt Tutorial**

Ingredients:

1 XL (Extra Large) t shirt

1 pair of scissors

1 sewing machine
or
1 good sewing hand

1 set of straight pins
or
1 set of glass tipped straight pins (recommended)

1 Iron

1 Yard stick, ruler, or measuring tape

1 piece of tailor chalk, crayon, or water soluble pencil (in a contrasting colour)

1 Seam ripper, nail scissors, or cuticle remover
-----------------------------------------------------
Time:

Depending on your experience this project should take 1-2 hours at the most.

-----------------------------------------------------
NOTE!!*** Each step that instructs you to "sew" use a number 2 zig-zag stitch to retain stretch in the t shirt. ***
------
Okay lay out your shirt, we are going to divide the shirt into three pieces: the skirt, the straps, and the waistband.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpxMBgfUX3I/AAAAAAAAABk/V6lJj03Q8-Y/s320/140_4053.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088025267806691186

The straps will be the first to be cut.

First, you will need to remove the stitches from the bottom hem of the shirt. Do this by using either your scissors, nail cutter, or cuticle remover. (my weapon of choice will be the cuticle remover.

Once you have removed all the stitches, it will look like this.
http://bp2.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzQkAfUX5I/AAAAAAAAAB0/ECO-c2JMOXM/s320/140_4068.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088170996047044498
Press open the unstitched hem with your iron.

Measure and mark 5" from the bottom of the newly opened hem and measure and mark 14" across.
http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzRPQfUX7I/AAAAAAAAACE/FAI5nixPSyQ/s320/140_4072.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088171739076386738

http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzRxQfUX8I/AAAAAAAAACM/x5OqJu2r5Yk/s320/140_4076.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088172323191939010
Cut this rectangle out from both sides of the shirt.

Do not cut the fold.

Fold in half, pin, and cut.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzSEgfUX9I/AAAAAAAAACU/nY_JVffbsac/s320/140_4086.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088172653904420818

http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzSsQfUX-I/AAAAAAAAACc/r4j7fXnS5Kc/s320/140_4087.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088173336804220898
Now fold each piece in half, pin, and sew raw edges together.

When finished cut off the excess.
http://bp2.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzTNAfUX_I/AAAAAAAAACk/4xc5HRYHC3c/s320/140_4091.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088173899444936690

http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzTiwfUYAI/AAAAAAAAACs/M7g5dIvsLwU/s320/140_4092.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088174273107091458
With the straps you can do one of three things:
1 You can leave them as they are and not turn them inside out.
2 Press the straps with the hem in the middle
3 Turn the straps inside-out and press seam on one side.

If you decide to turn the straps inside-out:
Attach a safety pin to one end of the straps.
Guide the safety pin inside of the strap as if it were a casing for elastic.
Keep guiding it through until the entire strap has the seam on the inside.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzUKgfUYCI/AAAAAAAAAC8/_zTgkf4miAI/s320/140_4093.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088174956006891554
Pin down with glass tipped pins and press flat with iron (starch is recommended) with seam on one side.

Right now your shirt bottom should look something like this:
http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzUtwfUYDI/AAAAAAAAADE/m4iD9zHRrnM/s320/140_4095.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088175561597280306
Next is the waistband.

You cut two separate parts from the shirt, one from the bottom of the shirt, another from the top of the shirt.

First measure and mark a 5"x10" (the 10" should be what is left of the bottom)
http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzVBQfUYEI/AAAAAAAAADM/CWPBauUw2d4/s320/140_4096.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088175896604729410
Cut that square off, do not cut the fold.

After the cut you should have a 5"x20" rectangle.
http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzVaQfUYFI/AAAAAAAAADU/DGj1pSiDWLk/s320/140_4097.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088176326101459026

For the skirt measure and mark an 18"x21" rectangle from the new bottom of shirt, cut.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzV4wfUYGI/AAAAAAAAADc/lx9LgCSIc04/s320/140_4100.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088176850087469154
Reverse the rectangle and pin only the sides together.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzXJwfUYHI/AAAAAAAAADk/8DuoTumBRHs/s320/141_4101.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088178241656873074
Sew the pinned sides.

For the waistband cut off sleeves from the left-over of shirt, open at seam.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzX0wfUYII/AAAAAAAAADs/g_r69R6FYac/s320/141_4105.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088178980391248002
Lay your first waistband piece on top, pin and cut around.
http://bp2.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzYVAfUYJI/AAAAAAAAAD0/9TOLTR4lotc/s320/141_4106.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088179534442029202

*Each person's size is different so "pinch and pin" sides of waistband to get desired fit, mark and sew.*
http://bp1.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzYwwfUYKI/AAAAAAAAAD8/q6liYOY51Ko/s320/141_4108.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088180011183399074

Pleat the skirt to the waistband, remember to pin the side seams of the waistband and skirt together first, to get an even match of pleats.

Pin pleats, and sew.

To finish the raw edges, sew a 1/2" hem at both ends (bottom of skirt, and top of waistband)
http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzZJQfUYLI/AAAAAAAAAEE/dpLqrjIIeZo/s320/141_4109.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088180432090194098
Attach straps to waistband: about 3" from side seam at the front.

Adjust the strap length to your desired fit, pin straps ends to the back of waist band 3" from side seam, pin.

Sew each strap end at top of waistband seam with a box stitch (a continuous stitch that creates a box with and X on the inside)
http://bp2.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzZ1AfUYMI/AAAAAAAAAEM/l1H7cso4UXM/s320/141_4112.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088181183709470914

Try on, make and size adjustments (since this is made from a t shirt, there should still be stretch when fitting on the jumper skirt, if not, adjust waistband with an elastic band or a zipper)

Enjoy!
http://bp3.blogger.com/_V_nztxo1bcY/RpzaPQfUYNI/AAAAAAAAAEU/pRTq8vQRZEo/s320/141_4113.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088181634681037010

This is Giblet my pin cushion :P Made with scrap T-Shirt, dental floss (by hand btw using whip stitch) and pin buttons for eyes. Stuffed him with a bunch of shirt scraps but cotton would work just as well.

Little thing does stand up to punishment too, more so than the average voodoo doll (no, I don't practice the Black arts, stop bugging me about that...jk jk)

So here is the end product just to get you interested....... as i always say play around with negative space. I did this by using blue tape my fave supply, kinda expensive for a roll ($7.00 for the thick one) I also changed the shirts color... first i used my left over black hair dye and squiggled designs on it and let it sit which made amazing cool patterns then i put it in a bucket of bleach which made the shirt have an ed hardy cloudy finish (really cool.)

http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/5682/diy004sr6.jpg

So first i marked off separate spaces and patterns on this shirt diagonal stripes, polka dots, downward stripes and of course checkered. Like this...
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6280/diy001zm7.jpg

Then i love using puffy paint, or fabric paint and i simply used a creit card (an expired one) to smooth the paint over all the tape and spaces as well-this saves paint and makes it really thin so it dries faster. Also i spray tons of febreeze on the paint while its drying so it doesn't smell...http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4937/diy003xm0.jpg

This is how it looke all covered with paint... then let it dry and pull off the tape!
AGAIN HERE'S THE FINAL PRODUCT:

I use stencils and spray paint to put designs on tshirts and canvas bags... and other stuff too. Here are a few of my favorites... The grey shirt is a blender, it was the first one I did. I make my stencils out of cereal boxes, I cut them with an xacto knife.

Ok check this out!!

here was my very first official DIY Project

I stole an old black Tee Shirt from my girlfriend that she never wore. so i decided to try and to some stenciling and it came out great. I uses some silver automotive paint, which i found very use full because it put the paint on thick and after the first coat it built up on top instead of soaking in again. i love it i where it all the time.

I made this t-shirt a while ago:
http://www.jessekester.nl/pics/sam.jpg
It's my second attempt at t-shirt making, It's Max (from Sam and Max, the point and click adventure) and he is about 30 Cm's high and looks a lot less green in real life.

I drew the stencil with a pencil on some paper and the cut it out using a hobby knife, I used regular white spray paint. The first layer of paint didn't stick that well and looked a bit gray, (its white paint on a dark green t-shirt) not realising i should wait for it to dry and do another coat I went crazy and spray-ed for about 20 minutes, I must have used at least half a can of paint.
Needless to say, the t-shirt was soaked and, even worse, after it dried it was hard like a piece of cardboard not really comfortable...

Still I wore it a few time's and had some fun responses.
Remarkably nobody recognized it as Max, the closest I got was, Happy Tree Friends but by far the most people thought it was the bunny from Donny Darko... Cant really tell you why...

This is a dress I altered from an old 60's one floating around my family's dress-ups box. It was a little girl's dress, sleeveless with a Peter Pan collar (hate! hate! hate!) and I adored the fabric and the skirt. I ripped out the shoulder seams and the collar, sewed up some of the seams on the skirt that were ripped, folded and sewed, put on some elastic for the halter and came up with this. : )

This is my versatile skirt/dress thing, that I've made from a pair of pants that my sister randomly tore apart and graciously forgot to mention it!!! When i wanted to wear them , I stuck my foot through the hole, but i didn't want to throw them away, so this is what I made from them:
