i love my tie cuff! the woman www.dangerpeach.com who made it was really nice too. super easy to make.
the wings are my favorite though. i love them so much and they were incredibly easy to make.

I tried making some of those nylons wings once before, but I was trying to make them all wild shapes... so then I was trying to pull the nylons to the wire and stitch around it... and then it made the wing shape get compressed to fit in the knee high nylons I was using and it was all a big fuss. ;...;
So then I tried wings (like MothManifest's?) made and it took -forever- stretching regular sheer fabric across the wire frames and stitching around...
And then I tried sewing a casing and hanging that from a frame and finishing the edges of the wings with a surger to get the fluttery look... but I messed THOSE up too, because I have no idea how to use a surger.
SIGH!
But I was thinking the nylon method was too limited in shape, but the ones in the episode look really cute! I should give it another consideration and see how it works. What I really liked was how you guys designed them to have them attached close together. Usually I've used stuff like electrical tape and had a long bar between them... that needs to be decorated up. But yours were really sweet.
One thing I learned with nylon ones is you can use an incense stick to burn holes in the nylon in a controlled way, and it looks pretty nice.
.... Honestly, I just like decorating them. I wish I could have pre-made ones like this and just let me doll them my way. n...n

Bah! I heard about the incense thing from her vid that a friend linked me to, but I didn't wanna say her name! >.< I thought maybe I could just mention the technique for interest's sake without getting into it...
She's really snotty so I don't wanna give her any props! She wrote me this e-mail in a totally passive aggressive tone saying basically that I stole her designs when it's obvious they're -nothing- alike and I'd put my work up against hers any day as being my -own- artist. (Basically she said that my stuff was "cute back when it was on [her website]") All my designs were my own hard work and techniques that I developed with a lot of practice over -years-. Besides, I've got a huge stack of past designs, and she only made ONE thing, and they don't look alike, they just use the same kind of floral wire. You can buy the stuff at ANY craft store in the wedding section, it's not like it's some magical secret material that only Emilie Autumn knows about or is allowed to use. And how could I be stealing her ONE design when I've made dozens and dozens, maybe even over a hundred and not a SINGLE one of them looks anything like her silly thing she suggested I ripped off? >.<! (To be honest, I didn't even LIKE her design. I thought it was bulky and unnatural.)
Even though I wrote back in a friendly and professional way, she never bothered to respond. So she's a big pootie head, in my book! >...< That's poor form, cause besides being uncalled for, it suggests that my exploration of my own artistic self is based around nothing but her. I don't even know anything about her, gawd.
Okay. Rant over. Sorry, I know that has nothing to do with this topic... I guess I just... bah! I wanted to tell my story ;...; but of course, I'm just little "nobody" Meander, and apparently she's a big musician who has a lot of fans and is on TV. Nobody's on my team cause I'm not a celebrity type so I have to share my piece. D:

I think these wings are great. I think the tips we share are great. I liked seeing how both Corinne and Emilie fastened their wing parts together. And I know I've seen that before, and I've fastened other armatures myself before.
The point is this discussion is not intellectual property. Riffing off ideas is not ripping off ideas.
Stuff like the way to burn neat holes in nylon is not patentable. If I tell you how to weave the ends of embroidery floss instead of knotting it, do I have to give my great aunt credit? Of course not. The hole burning tip is good, but not unique. If it was a way of burning spirals that held an amazing shape that would be intellectual property, but as it is it's nothing more than tool use.
Meander, darling, you are amazingly talented. And the chica with the bridal wings? Lovely. Corinne's wings are fabulous. Emilie's are, too, but they are different. And that's the way it should be.
So has anyone found any particular type of paint to be best? Mix in any medium, or any particular consistency?

Lizzy, I completely agree with you.
As for paint, I haven't ever painted them, but I would have tried just a metallic acrylic craft paint, if I did. I use it for other projects and I feel like you get a solid coat the first time around, so you don't need to gunk it up and it has a nice shimmery quality, even if you use the cheapo brand that's a dollar a bottle.
Mostly, I really like the crystals and wires and flowers on mine. <3 I was totally inspired by :: http://www.faeriegrove.com/ because I think it's some freaking amazing work. Their wings were very $$$, but you can just -see- the hours of detailing and construction in there. My favorite pair was :: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/meanderous/ladylake3.jpg
It was nice to know that even their fabric got a bit ripply. I was trying mini ones hoping that small or 'plain' shapes would make it easier to pull it equally taut, but as you can see, not so much :: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/meanderous/Photo68.jpg (they're not trimmed yet, so pay no mind to that.) My first pair was a full size set of tri-wings that were layered over each other and were draped with pearls as sort of homage to those Lake Lady Wings up there, but I was bummed I couldn't get them to look smooth.
I have a question about harnesses! The ribbon around the shoulders is cute, but I was really hoping to develop a way of letting the wings be worn invisibly. Best I had come up with was a sort of long U shaped harness that could be slipped down the back of the shirt or dress, but it seems like there should be a better, more comfortable way that doesn't involve tying around the shoulders (at least visibly). Any ideas...?

Hmmm, let's work with the blue wings in the first photobucket pic you hotlinked.
See the bar connecting the two wings? Imagine instead a reinforced bra strap, decorated of course, that you put two or four massive hooks over. I'm thinking of the large twill tape covered kind that are used on some dress coats or furs to secure them blindly. We see the hook and eye combo in lots of other items on a much smaller scale, but these would have to be an inch long for the hook at the very least.
They'd be sewn into the ribbon covering the bar in the photo I mentioned, or over the joins of other styles of wings. The bra strap would have to be showing on a low back, or at least a back low enough to hook the wings on. I hate bras, but what are you going to do?
Because of the size and the aerodynamics or the physics involved, I think you'd have to have an anchor around the chest or both shoulders somehow. The wings would probably droop or shift too easily with anything that was just on the back.
Maybe hand sized wings could work with something else, but I'd be concerned about how comfortable they could be. Of course a rigid board or length of metal strapping could anchor them, but you'd have to have really tough skin or really cushy anchors.
The hooks from the heavy duty hooks and eyes might be available at haberdashery supplies, or you could make them out of 16 gauge wire. One hook would be kinda like the Taurus symbol, a V with two curled horns, only the V folds back on itself for the hook. Wrap every bit of metal with cloth tape and sew the curled loops to your wings.
I have no idea if that would work, but if the wings aren't too unwieldy I'd try it.

Ah, but see, then you still have to wear a dress low enough for the bra strap to be exposed. Most of my clientelle are costumers or ren faire goers and their dresses may be very high in the back... but you're right, with the right kind of dress, it could be nice. I think the thing is that even with ribbon attachements, a person thinking ahead could find a way to slip them under their clothing or use clear bra-strap material straps and work them under the clothing... So in my mind, the trick is finding something a person could slip on after they're fully dressed or if they have a very high neck in back and not have straps show.
As for anchoring them, I bet if you used some sturdy wire or designed your wings in a certain way so that part of it went down your low back and rested against it, you could get it to stay using just the heavy duty hooks. It'd be a bit like a kickstand. XD
I was trying to remember, I think at one point, I did imagine a harness that had something to do with going around the torso, but now I can't remember. ;...; I'll have to keep thinking... Sorry I didn't respond last night. We were taking a break from our LAN party thingie and my eyes were all glazed up. Notations on what gauge of wire were pretty far from being understood at that point. (But I got it this morning, no problem.)

Thinking about wing suspension…
High necked backs are a real problem if you don’t want to have the shoulder-tie suspension method. That method provides four points for stability: above and below each shoulder.
Without sewing wings onto a high necked back costume, there are two challenging ways I see as possibilities.
One, through the dress itself: Have one or two reinforced holes over both shoulder blades. This could be a disguised buttonhole type thing in seams, or hidden by a placket or other detail. The standard shoulder-tie suspension method could be employed, but under the costume. The ties would go through the back of the dress. Problems would be with shifting of the wings. There might be a sweet spot for each person’s wings, and that would be hard to determine ahead of time. It would be dictated by how they move, posture, and the drape of the clothing plus the way the wings sit. This also damages the costume for non-winged wear, but might be done skillfully enough that the holes are not visible.
Two, the armature you’re suggesting: a support piece that extends down the back. This would probably be a separate armature, detachable from the wings. I’d probably go with a heavier wire, perhaps 14 gauge, or maybe for lightness, a somewhat flexible copper pipe. It’s also possible with the narrower gauge to get a heat shrink tubing over it, then sealed with a heat gun. Depending on how high the dress’s back is, the armature would come up from the wings, go over the collar and down the back. I’d keep the base spread about shoulder blades apart, about where they will attach to the wings.
So the armature is down the back to just above the waist, then curves to go straight up the other side, over the collar in reverse and down to the wing.
Major problems here are with comfort and wearability. The wings could certainly be worn that way and they would be relatively stable, but it will be uncomfortable for the wearer. To minimize that, the armature stops above the waist and does not sit directly over the spine except where it crosses just above the waist. The armature should probably be custom fitted to the person wearing the wings. There will be a noticeable s-curve in both vertical sides, matching the curvature of the back. The horizontal section at the waist should be convex with an additional curvature over the spine, preventing direct contact. That’s comfort and safety.
Something plush and stretchy like a tube sock could be stretched over this frame where it contacts the person’s back. It would probably be best to wear a leotard or something similar to protect the skin from chafing.
With this back piece, all kinds of normal movement and postural changes will be difficult. Coughing, laughing, turning the torso, bending over, natural walking and other stuff will be affected.
Other than that, I got nuthin'.
