I was just on Etsy and came across an article about craftism, mixing crafting and activism. I've become really inspired and I really want to start using my skills to benefit less fortunate people. While there are plenty of charities out there that I could donate to, I feel hesitant. Like I don't know if the items will get to the people they're intended for. So who here does this sort of donating? And does anyone know of any really good charities? Also, I love sewing and knitting and am interested in knitting baby clothes and newborn caps, things like that.
Thanks!

if you're interested in baby things contact your local hospital and see if they are in need of things for the nic u or for new mothers in need...you can just donate things and they usually set up little baskets/bags of things.
they might have some rules to follow...like blankets for the nic u need to be out of ONE piece of fabric usually so that there aren't any rough seams rubbing on the little one's new skin....
also if you want to make sure that your stuff goes where it's supposed to then I'd suggest a women's shelter or something...it usually stays local and they give your donations instead of dropping them off at like good will or something where they sell it (I know that this is worth while also)

Yeah I figured if I sent any knit stuff to good will, one of us Thread heads would probably pick it up and recycle it lol. Which is totally fine, but not exactly what I'm looking for.
Hospital and Women's shelter, I especially like the Women's shelter idea. Thank you!
Does anyone know of any other organizations?

i remember in my theatre we all got together and made these heart pillows for children that have had heart problems/breathing problems. it would hurt their chest to cough so the nurses would give them a pillow to hug so it wouldnt hurt so much.
i forgot what hospital/organization it was... maybe you can look into it.

With my club, Community Advocate Teens of Today, all my crafting and sewing has a meaning towards it, usually to help the under served youth who are victims of homelessness/domestic violence, recovering from drug addiction or has had the education system screw them over.
Craft for good. I'm sure you'll do GREAT THINGS!!!

You might try these charities: Online Angels or Angels for Hope. Online Angels has alot of different things you can make and do, and Angels for Hope is mostly to do with crocheting small angels and smilie faces to give hope to others. I have been involved with both and they are both great.

I didn't wanna post a new thread about this,
But I was wondering...would you guys email a charity to ask how to help?
I (obviously) don't have money, but I wanted to help with my crafting, too...

ya i had some ladies yesterday and i was talking to them as i was ringing up their yarn and they said to get rid of all their scrap yan they knit hat for the homeless one of them feeds at a church once a month and for christmas she just made a bunch of hats and she said it was so great cause they were all like
omg you made this for me?
she said that they were so happy and it felt so great to know that they wouldn't be cold and also it really cute to see them walking around town wearing the little hats ^_^
but it made me want to do it too
i've been wanting to do something for the community and knitting my little hats would be great
cause i know i don't want 30 hats for myself with all the yarn i have
and if i want to buy any more yarn i have to get rid of a good chunk of what i do have
even though i really don't
i love all my yarn :'(

I've done the Warm Up America charity where you knit up squares. They take squares that they get across the nation and sew them up into blankets. It's really nice and super easy.
