JANUARY CHALLENGE:
Take a period item of clothing and remake it for modern times!
In association, the mini-challenge will be to make an accessory to go with your long challenge piece!
(I.e. if you make a coat for the long challenge, make a hair peice, hat, purse, necklace, etc. to go with the coat).
Guidelines:
Mini-Challenge:
-Budget of $5
-Recycle items to make your final product
Deadline: January 14th
Long Challenge:
-Budget of $10
-Recycled materials encouraged, but not required
-Must include picture/sketch/image of original inspiration piece
-Must be some connection to original piece and modernized piece
Deadline: January 28th
Please direct all general rules questions to the PTB FAQ (http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?t=4109) and Super Final Rules (http://forum.threadbanger.com/showthread.php?t=10929)
And all questions regarding this challenge specifically to one of the judges!
(Your November judges are TomSawyer, glass__onion, jsedai_77, klc1168, and patchwork_kitty)
Please take nice, clean photos to submit for your projects. This is the only thing the judges get to see, so make sure they are easy to make out, well composed, and appropriately sized.
Hi all!
Working to get PTB back up and running!
A few small changes I was considering in order to simple things up a bit, was permanent judges (myself, and a few others have offered/I have contacted) so we don't have to worry about that silly rotating judges schedule. Also, registering for it, I don't think it really necessary, if we're eliminating the rotating judges schedule. So anyone can participate as many or few times as they wish, and in any challenge! Also, that will eliminate the huge extra step of anonimizing the entries, because I think will a core group of faithful, permanent judges, they can be trusted to be unbiased.
I think we'll still keep the mini-challenge/big challenge system.
I know a lot of people are working on Halloween stuff this month, and even those that aren't, halfway through the month is a little late to start a new monthly challenge, so I'm aiming for Sunday Nov. 1st to start this back up! Making the mini-challenge due on the 14th, and the big challenge due 28th! This time around, I will also be putting in judges deadlines, so we won't have people waiting for a week for results. The results -will- be released by the end of the month, even if some of the judges haven't cast their vote.
Please PM me if you wish to be a permament judge. Keep in mind this will mean that you will be unable to participate as a contestant. I will encourage the judges to produce their own projects, if so inspired, but they won't recieve any judging/points.
Those who wish to provide challenge ideas, PM me as well!

I think permanent judges is a great idea but be strict with the deadlines becuase, for me I never entered because I never knew when the next one was going to start. It would just get later and later in the month. Good luck and hope I have time to participate in at least one.

Yeah, I'm going to make it the exact same every month.
New challenge - 1st
Mini-challenge deadline - 14th
Big challenge deadline - 28th
Judges ruling - Last day of the month
Also, with permanent judges there won't be random new people trying to get together to discuss a new challenge, so there won't be that delay.

This sounds so great!! I'm super excited for november, now.
I was thinking, though, if the judges were getting burnt out on thinking up challenges, would they be open to ideas from participants? I don't actually have an idea, it was just an errant thought.

also I had a thought
what if for the rest of Oct ppl could post ideas they have for PTB challenges and the judges could then have a large list of things to pull from...it would still be a suprise cause no one would know what they picked till it was announced and they could still come up with things amongst themselves....

Okay, lol, I've had about eight people offer to be a permanent judge. Honestly, I didn't expect that many people to want the position. I think I'm gonna try to shave it down to three permanent-permanent judges, and have two that rotate out each month, like alternates! So there will be five total each month. I think, because glass__onion is still handling the photos, they will be a perm judge... And I'll think on the others.

it's nice to know that my machine isn't the only one buried underneath all other things sewing related -_-;
can't wait for the next contest though! I've been dying to enter since I discovered PTB...unfortunately that was only a little before it all pittered out

The special monthly winner avatar!
With your choice of color!
http://www.sickonsin.com/store/images/women/wom_t_skullscissors_as.png http://www.sickonsin.com/store/images/women/wom_t_skullscissors_bb.png http://www.sickonsin.com/store/images/women/wom_t_skullscissors_bk.png http://www.sickonsin.com/store/images/women/wom_t_skullscissors_cb.png http://www.sickonsin.com/store/images/women/wom_t_skullscissors_pk.png
I tried to put some sort of text "Winner" or such on several different avatars, but I found that with the small dimensions, it simply looked cleaner and better to have them textless.
jsedai_77
10-23-2008, 04:57 PM
I like the avatar..but I do think it needs something to denote it's relationship to PTB..I think "winner" would be too big and look jumbled or squished...how about just PTB maybe under the scissors?
TomSawyer
10-23-2008, 05:18 PM
Hmm, I'll give it a shot, see what I can do.

I like them too but I agree with Jsedai I think it needs something to denote the winner status on it as well but they are really cute and I love skulls. Nice job on them BTW.
If my artist daughter isn't busy on sunday, I'll have her play around with the design just a bit to see if she can get PTB winner in there somewhere.

I think the avatar is fine by itself. We know it's the winner. ^_^
But yeah, I can't wait for the first challenge to be announced.

10-25-2008, 03:40 AM
ok so I keep looking back at the avatar...and I REALLLLLY like it..I think I found a solution? see the gold/yellow border with the + sign on the bottom right corner? what if you utalized all four corners P T B each in seperate ones and maybe instead of a + you could use a star??? I dunno...but i like the simplicity and cleanness of it..that's all I could think of to keep it neat looking but still give the newbies a clue as to what's up with the sweet avatar....or you could ignore me and leave it as is.....

I like the first one (the grey one) I'd maybe separate the PTB so that it was P bottom left T under the scissors and B bottom right that way it doesn't block the cool scissors....the first one covers up too much of the skull and scissors
TomSawyer
10-29-2008, 03:04 PM
Okay, I'm thinking that instead of separate threads for each challenge, I will simply edit this thread to release the new challenges every month. This thread is already pinned, in an easy to find location, and it would keep us from having all sorts of extraneous threads running around.
I could see this being potentially problematic only because people tend to post their questions on the thread, instead of directing them towards the FAQ or contacting a judge via PM. But I think overall, if we could get people to ask questions in the FAQ or in PM, that it would be quite a bit more tidy, and easier to find. And the mods wouldn't be needing to pin and unpin a new thread each month.
Thoughts?

LONG CHALLENGE DUE AT NEW YORK MIDNIGHT TONIGHT!

I still haven't heard back from glass__onion regarding Novembers PTB, and since it too late, and the end of December is likely to be harried for everyone, I suppose the next PTB challenge will be scheduled for January! Sorry for the late notice, I was hoping to hear back about Nov.

I know that no one submitted to the short challenge. I have not heard anything from glass__onion regarding the long challenge, after sending off an e-mail a week ago. I might send off another one, maybe it got lost in spam hell.
If no one did submit to the long challenge, I may just say that we'll stretch the current challenge through January. I expected PTB to be slow-going as we're trying to get it back up and running, so I'm not going to stress about this too much. Just need to re-spread the word around! I had a pretty brill idea for this, so maybe I could try to whip it up and post it up in Projects to get the interest up.

Questionnn :)
For the long challenge -
Are we to make an item of clothing with inspiration from the past (ex. clothing from the 80s) and/or are we to take an old item of clothing (thrifted or found in the closet) and transform it to fit this century?
Just want to make sure I'm 100% clear ^^

Yeh I keep getting so confused on this hey. Maybe it's just me but I think it's because there's like 50 threads for this all over the boads. lol.
