View Full Version : So the Steampunk Vid's really got me going...

I love learning about new things out there in the world and when I was in high school I LOVED LARP *mainly for the costumes and then for writing, I won't lie* and I wish Steampunk had been big 10 years ago. The videos really got me going and I've been diving into the whole thing... I've even decided that it will be my costume for Halloween this year.

So I already have a corset, cause everyone knows they are so freaking multi-purpose-full, and I'm sewing the skirts. I opted for a black cotton twill under skirt that hits at my knees and shorter over skirt that will be gathered in the front that is made out of iridescent-y green, gold, bronze material. The black skirt waist is elastic and the over skirt waist band is a bronze ribbon so I'll have a butt bow. oOOo and I'm making the bustle and collar that were in the video... LOVE THOSE! Haven't decided if I want to make the shirt from the tutorial yet.

Accessories wise I've got black knee high boots and awesome pin striped tights. I'm thinking about a feather headpiece like the most recent ones fro Project Runway... WOO WOO go Leann! FIDM ALUMNI!

I guess what I'm asking is... What am I missing? I've been googling images and watching movies for inspiration... Any thoughts or ideas? Opinions? Anything is welcome!

What are you going to be for Halloween? My boyfriend didn't want to dress up with me so he's matching his friends. They are all going as mascots for fast food chains ( i.e. Ronald McDonald, Jack, The King from Burger King, Long John Silver) Silly boys!

Hehe!
This is pretty ironic since I've been doing the exact same thing!

I would love to see pictures of your costume when you're finished. I'll be happy to trade with you! ^.^

But I think you could put more of a mechanical aspect into your costume since it is the general basis of Steampunk. I suggest dissecting a few watches and hot gluing a broach to pin to your top or even adding it to the base of the feather head piece you're planning on making.

Happy sewing!

Accessories!

Goggles, skeleton keys, brooches, gears/cogs, chains...but the biggest thing is functionality!

Don't know if you've seen this, but it's a great resource.

 OMG thank you!!

I'm going steampunky for halloween (like everyone else...), but I couldn't find a really good source to glean fashion tips from. I'm really glad you posted this :)

Dont forget the gloves!...maybe brown or black leather ones and glue those machanicle accesories to the top of the gloves! Even on your corset you can add some huge steampunk piece in the middle that you can remove later!?!
Don't forget your dangly earings!!
Just my 2 cents.

Serious this link saved my butt... I found some great images on Google but this was great for inspiration. Thank you so much!

Here's some pics of what I got so far... Changed the shirt idea when I found this shirt at a thrift store, found a Nerf gun so I'm in the process of painting it so here's a few images of it so far.

WHOA that nerf gun looks AWESOME so far! Great idea.. Since my grandmother won't let me borrow one of her guns for Halloween (yes, my grandmother has guns. Hardcore, right?!?!), this is a very good alternative for me!! :D

While I would LOVE to take all the credit I can't... I googled Steampunk guns and got some images of what to me looked like toy guns that had been painted to so I went to a thrift store and found some. I used regular craft paint I had laying around from school but it takes like 4 coats of paint and dry, paint and dry, to get it to stick. I would highly recommend a base coat of spray paint that is meant to stick to plastic just so the other paint has something to stick to. Or if you really want, my friend took some fine grade sand paper to it and roughed it up but I didn't like the finish he got. Good luck!

I've seen them, too... THey look really cool, but sell for more than they're worth, so I applaud you making your own. (I plan to do the same thing at some point in my life.) YOu could also decorate your gun by hot-gluing some wires, cogs, etc to it (especially to cover up the nerf symbol).

Also, you can get a wrist brace (those things they sell at Rite-Aid 'n' what-not) and decorate it to look like a robotic wrist or something...to match your costume. It could be your fancy gun hand!

Also, consider various styles of hats. Top hats rock, but so do bowler hats, and head pieces are fun to make.

Wow, I feel so much less original now. XD I couldn't sleep last night, so I started patterning a half-corset... it mostly worked, but now my boss knows for a fact that I am a crazy person. (I work in a costume shop, so I just came in early to make and fit a mock-up)

corset-wise I've been thinking of doing the same thing. my friend was all freaked up because I was staring at her top so I could see the pieces of the corset-esque thing X]

That gun looks fantastic!

This page lists a bunch of steampunk-themed movies (scroll down):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_steampunk_works

I know that "Wild Wild West" (yeah, the Will Smith movie!) and "The Golden Compass" get mentioned a lot as big inspirations.

I can definitely see getting ideas from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (one of my fave movies as a kid - it's colorful!!!) and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (saw it on HBO once).

***Edit: Yay! Chitty Chitty Bang Bang DVD website - the music is LOUD but fun. http://www.chittychitty.com/home.html

Hey man, I'm no expert. :D Heck, I didn't know "croquis" until you said something.

All right, Treasure Planet, too!

Step 1: find a top you want your corset to be like that fits you.

Step 2: measure from seam to seam on each little section, and make newspaper pattern pieces the same size as each section, so that when you lay them out, the pattern pieces line up and cover the shirt.

Step 3: pin the pieces to the fabric of your choosing; use a ruler to draw a 1" margin all the way around each, and cut 'em out.

Step 4: Do the same for a lining fabric and some lovely fusible interfacing.

Shall I continue? This is kind of fun...
