My sister made this really cool homecoming mum for her boyfriend.
She started out with the plain white and silver mum they sell at Michael's. Then added lots of red and blue ribbon, stars, cow bells, and his favorite cartoon character Curious George. "Bel Air" is his highschool and is spelled out in silver pipe cleaners. She added lots of embellishments that they sell at Michaels and added an outer trim of white feathers.

a mum is a southern homecoming tradition.

you wear them to school the day of the game and then to the game itself.

typically, a boy wears a smallers one on his arm(called a garter) and the girl would wear one like the one in the picture.
idk why the boy is getting such a big one.

its a very nice mum.

Thanks to ashley_logan for explaining the tradition. I'm from El Paso, Texas and I didn't realize that this mum/garter thing was only in the south. Where I'm from girls wear mums around their necks and they are usually so wide that you can't fit through a door and are usually about 4ft long. Guys wear garters around their arms and the one I pictured is a medium size (for guys). I hope my pics inspire other southerners to be creative and make this homecoming truly unique.

....where do you wear said mum?

....do you walk around with it like a cape?

.......are you supposed to put various jungle animals on it?

You either pin it to your shirt, or kinda make a necklace out of it.
Most people do put some sort of animal, be it a school mascot, teddy bear, or anything else they like.
I'm not quite sure though why a guy is getting a mum, guys typically get garters, which are much smaller.
