Is there any specific reasons why it needs to be semi flat? also, are shirts with this spray paint on them washer & dryer safe?

I use fabricpaint when I make mine. It works perfectly. Haven't faded yet. But I recommend several thin layers, which will give you an even print, more lasting print, and more defined edges.

Any tips on fabric paint brands/online stores? I'm mostly looking for cheap and effective :)

I noticed that in the videos they use this http://www.filmtools.com/krseflblsppa.html
and it doesn't cost much.

i made a shirt with a design and regular spray paint. I don't remember how many coats i did, but it was quite a bit! It has survived quite a bit of washings as well. You have to make sure though when picking out a shirt that it doesnt have alot of polyester in it, because some of the chemicals in the spray paint can melt the shirt. I think my shirt was was a Hanes 90% cotton/10%polyester.

I've heard you should avoid using regular paint on fabric. Try to get hold of some fabric paint spay cans. I think they will last a lot longer. May I ask what "semi flat" is?

I sprayed on a shirt aswell some time ago :) but i had two problems...

1 .The edges were very inexact (inaccurately). :(

2 . And i couldn't make the spraypaint layer thick enough so it looked really bad and you could see the original colour of the shirt through the paint spray!!!!! :(

I found the paint that you use in art projects that if you get any of it on your clothes it will stay forever and it actually does.I just have forgotten the name of the paint.I've used it and its worked well
